Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I very recently got a pair of wild apisto Macmasteri  , they have settled in fantastically but here comes the weird part, i have placed them in a 2'x1'x15" tank with 8 nannostomus morthanlerei (excuse spelling) and 6 cory venezualan reds, some plants a few caves and leaf litter, now the female has gone into breeding dress and every time she sees the male she does her corting dance and guess what the male does...... legs it to the nearest bunch of plants and hides  ... any suggestions folks

You need to get him to have empathy after doing the ironing and reading Cosmo, not just do it or read it.
When she asks if her bum looks big in her new outfit.....he should know from reading cosmo that he cannot say 'yes' and he cannot say 'no' either: it is a fine balance to tread when aksed such questions.

But failing all metro-man advice, the natural world is quite ruthless when it comes to a duff male trying to attract a female.
He may be showing signs only obvious to the female that he is not going to be good enough at tending the young (for example).

I've seen many a superb siamese fighter do a fantastic dance ritual, but when the female finally got tempted to go to the nest....and saw that he was a duffer with a crap nest then the male suddenly became a victim.

If he won't take to a vacuum cleaner and play Freddy, it's always best to buy more than one "pair" of apistos. The males will fight to the death to impress the females, who will then be sufficiently wowed to surrender their eggs to the winner. They might kill him later, if not suitably impressed, but shit happens.

Any point in putting in a divider to allow the Males and Females familiarise themselves with each other?

Is there still the one female?
When there's more, they usually get off the blob quickly enough and compete for the male, when suitably impressed with their choice. Unless she plays tennis........

No harm no foul christy just a case of double check all posts just in case, anyway if the males are frightened of a female imagine what's seeing a fish caught on the fly would do to them, heart attack central
