Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys

I have my new 300 Litre tank ready to setup im looking at tiger oscars as a tank inhabitant but just wondering as to what substrate people have gone with wether it be sand or gravel I just want to create a happy environment for it to grow healthy and strong :)

also I'm based in Galway so if anyone has any suggestions where to get a good specimen of a tiger oscar please let me know.

Many thanks

300 litre tank is going to be a bit small for oscars depending on how many u are going to put in,
it will be fine for young oscars but they grow so fast u will be needing a bigger setup for them
i have 2 oscars and i have gravel in the tank
they are fairly messy eaters and produce alot of crap so you will need a good filter
they have some lovely 2" oscars in emerald aquatics for 20 euro

Yeah gravel works fine for me too. Saw a lovely good size tiger oscar in Petmania at the weekend.

Mine loves pellets and prawns.

Well I have the space for a 7ft tank in my office but just have to save the pennies first but I'll stick with the idea of the 6ft in the kitchen as the missus approved that one  and I'll check out petmania as theyre pretty near me

Thanks :)

I have 2 10" Oscars they are beyond messy, crap more than my Mastiff, i put large pebbles on the bottom they move them round they way they want them, very handy for cleanin the waste away, internal power head blows the waste into one corner handy clean up with suction hose.

No there not they are a great fish to own and watch, i can pet my two like a dog, youtube them, not the muppets feeding them stupid things put in oscars playing, all fish need attention just different fish require different levels, if its a tank of fish just to look at and do minimal work there are lots of easier fish to deal with, the tank i have them in is a corner unit, people are drawn to the tank the minute they enter the room because the lads come up bang the glass and want attention. They are worth the little extra effort.

they are like an aquatic puppy, feed out of your hand and give them a pat
very easy going until another fish keeps tormenting them and then bang ,all hell breaks loose and kills it and all the other fish in the tank with anger
i have mine in a 12ft tank with other big cichlids so they are all fine

Wow a 12ft tank now thats something to aim for and it sounds like the more I learn about these fish the more I want them I'd probably keep just a couple of oscars and a plec based on the size of tank I have right now I've always had plecs and they Sh*t more than the heifers in the field to be fair. Do they breed much or is that unlikely ?
