Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Thanks for the tip Damien. I picked up a great plant that I hadn't seen before in any shop in blanch last month (cant remember name but will post it later), they are very reasonable with their prices and this potted plant only cost me 4 euro. From the results I have gotten so far I would have paid three times that.

This is the plant in the middle, if you see one get it! (I recommend)

how it ties in with the tank!

Even the Otto's like it

The only drawback with buying plants in Petstop is that they know very little about them. If you don't know what you're looking for, you could very well end up with something that doesn't suit your water/lighting conditions.

Regards,

Ken.

I agree with you Ken, I think that way we don't see a lot of shops that "specialise" in plants. Granted they might get a good selection but is it no where near that which is actually available. Plus I would think that it has a lot to do with supply and demand.

The only saving grace about the Tropica plants is that the cards that they come with "usually" unless you are buying the common plant etc... eleoda, stricta, vallis, camboda, bacopa. have details on them regarding size, lighting, recommended position (don't think it includes ferts or co2 requirements). You could always look up a book in the shop if they had one handy rather than relying on the shops information (that's if they had one handy!!)

Have a look at www.tropica.dk. All the plants they are doing are decscribed there with needs concerning light, temperature, kH, etc.
The plant in the picture is Cryptocoryne wendtii (brown).

On the Tropica homepage there is a button on the top right hand side which says "Advanced search" click this button and it brings you to a plant finder search feature, enter your tank details, light level pH Kh etc and it will bring up a list of plants that are suitable for your water and lighting levels, very handy feature just not very obvious it exists though.

I just tried that feature on the tropica website. In my case it was rather strange in as far as it gave me only one species of swordplant suitable for a discus tank at 28 degrees temp. Funny thing is that I have a couple of species of swords in my tank that grow quite well and the one they recommend (Marble queen) won't grow properly.

Hi Apisto.
The only prob I have is finding some Amazon sword with good root growth. most retailers have plenty but they are all LEAD weighted with hardly any root stock.

Hi Russell,
any particular species you are looking for? What I have found ist that you can get those swords that come with the leadweight to grow properly if you clip the roots to half the length and plant as usual. That sounds quite drastic but works. If you have fish that dig a good bit this will obviously not work

Just 1 for the discus tank. Tying to get the Tefe's paired up & have always uesd this method rather than a cone, until I know they are a compatible pair. They have put on an inch overall ( about 7 inches) and the finage is back to near perfect.

Fins and Things have some rather big one with plenty of roots. I think it's E. cordifolius but wouldn't swear on it. They are about 50 cm high. Maybe not the best of swords for discus to spawn on. E. amozonicus, x barthii or hoeremanni or E. bleheri would be a better option. Any tropica dealer should be able to get you mother plants.
