Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nanjas

They were Martial art experts in Nunjitsu and were hired assasins.
They dressed all in black and that included a hood like mask with a small slit for the eyes.

Good man Anto nearly right :D

Darren its probably Egeria Najas, one of the most comon aquarium plants around, Easy plant similar to egeria densa (probably the most common aquarium plant) fast grower no particular requirements, grows lots of side shoots which can easily be propagated, just break them off and plant.

Or it could be what the Americans call guppy grass, Najas quadalupensis, another very easy plant, breaks easily, used a lot for fry tanks.

second plant would not be as common around these parts, very common in the US because its a native plant.

Anto i dont think a ninja would last long in my tank. Although you never know, they are a bit sneaky.

Zig do you know which would tolerate a verry high pH? Egeria Najas or Najas quadalupensis.

Darren I think the second one is more Ph tolerent, Najas quadalupensis, the US dept of agriculture say it will tolerate a Ph of 5.5 to 10, so quite a range there, this plant is also is also known as najas grass forgot to mention that.

The first one from the info I have (book) has a lot less tolerence, Ph6 to 7.5.

IME the KH of the water can be important for some plants as well, certain plants I find difficult to grow because of the low kh around here, they will grow, just a lot slower than normal.

Unless the Ph is off the charts I would try and grow any plant really, sometimes the guidelines are just that, guidelines, and the plant might grow fine for you, thats my experience anyway but in this case probably wiser to try the second one.

I think it is the Najas grass alright. Najas quadalupensis
It's for a tank that will have a pH of 8-9 but closer to the 9. and it sounds like the plant i am looking for.
Cheers :D

Ph9 is pretty high alright, one I mentioned already Egeria densa (eleodea) will tolerate very high Ph up to Ph10, mosses should do ok as well.
