Planting Vallisneria
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey guys, I was looking at getting some vallisneria for my tank. It currently has no plants in it, got rid of the anubias and java fern I had. Having never had plants that you actually plant rather than tie to wood, I just have a question or two.
I have a thin layer of small gravel in the tank (smaller than the usual gravel you see, bigger than course sand granules if that is any help). Is it possible to plant vallisneria straight into this? I was also thinking that I could put a small tub (a shallow one, thinking something like what you get from some chineese takeaways - the plastic ones, not the foil ones) with some plant growing substrate (JBL, Dennerle etc) in there then cover it with the gravel. Would this be a better option? Or also thinking if I plant directly into the gravel I could add some of those root tablets?
As you can see have a few ideas in my head just not sure what you guys think would be best? Any ideas or help would be great. The tank is a Fluval Osaka 155L with the stock lighting, and is already up and running, so changing the substrate is something I would prefer not to have to do. It is a fairly tall tank so was looking to get something that would help cover the back wall.
Thanks
Bill

Either way will work bill, if you are using the potted method, make sure you make plenty of small holes in the container to enable water to pass through it, tabs aren't necessary as the waste from the fish should be sufficient, Val is a very easy plant to grow. Bear in mind, Val reproduces vegetatively by suckering so it will be hampered by the walls of the container.

Cheers Kev, you are a great help as always! When you say 'Bear in mind,
Val reproduces vegetatively by suckering so it will be hampered by the walls of the container.', I assume this means that it spreads out runners on or under the substrate and the walls of the container would not let this happen?
Thanks again,
Bill

Pretty much Bill, the runners will, however, make their way out over the sides snd hook themselves into the substrate on the floor of the tank, the problem with this is that the tangled mass is difficult to deal with as you'll need to detangle the pot from the rest of the stuff, if I were you, I'd try it in the substrate directly.

Vallis will do it's own thing!
No matter how much I pull up the plants that grow to the front of the tank and re-plant them at the back, they KEEP re-growing in the same direction. (It's not light that's attracting them, there's 6 T5HO tubes at the back of the tank....)
I'm convinced it's a weed with no sense of asthetics.

Pfff, plants these days just have no respect do they Murph!!
Could anybody help with IDing the plant in the left hand side in this video? The one with the big leaves in front of the Val? Looking at the comments could it be Ozelot Sword? But it doesn't look like the pics on the web of it so not sure?
