Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Sounds like you have hair algae, certainly based on your description of the algae on the rock. Some pics would help confirm this. Most issues with Algae in the tank come from elevated phosphates, primarily due to excessive amounts of uneaten food in the tank. Post some pics of the algae and plants if you can to help in confirming the diagnosis.
You could try your lfs to get your water tested for phosphates, should ideally be a nitrate to phosphate ratio of 10 to 1, any more phosphates than this and you are looking at problems with algae. You could try reducing the amount of food given at any one time and see if things improve.
Also, adding an overdose of Easycarbo for a few days will kill off the algae. Just don’t add too much, typically 2 times the recommended dose every second day for 3 to 4 doses will do the job.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Bill.

Not a stupid question, easycarbo is a liguid adative for feeding plants. It has a recommended dosage based on water volume in the tank and an overdose of it will wipe out the algae. Bear in mind that too much will kill fish, so be careful not to add more than 2 to 3 times the stated dose for your tank volume.
Eliminitang excess phosphates is the best option for keeping the tank clear of algae, that said, its almos impossible to keep algae out of a mature tank.

Cheers,

Bill.

Hi guys,
I got the easycarbo and by my reckoning i have a 90ltr tank - 15ltr for wood rock and sand.
easycarbo dosage is 1mil/50ltrs so i put in 5 mil every second day for 3days and no difference

I could be wrong, but I was given to believe it should be every day?
I don't think, either, that it would work as quickly as three every-other days.
Over to someone who might know what they're talking about!
