Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have these floating plant in my tank...
My first question is can anyone i.d. them please?
and my second question is, is this a good way to stop them from moving all over the tank because of surface flow?
They were swirling and moving all over the place and not really much good as cover for my Gourami's. Now they're stationary and more central under the light will they grow better? My plan is to cover the straws in some weeping moss and hopefully get a nice effect?
Cheers!
Niall

Niall,
You would appear to have some Duckweed and Frogbit, the latter should eventually grow somewhat larger while the Duckweed will stay around the size it is now.
The suggestion to cover the straws with moss sounds feasible but you might be slightly better off with something a little more stable, if you can get hold of some rigid tubing and put an ordinary aquarium sucker at each end - to allow you to anchor it to front and back of the tank this would be preferable, I think.
Another thing to consider would be to lower the supply of water (from a filter?) so that it doesn't create such a flow on the surface. Gouramis, being fish of pretty still-types of water do not really appreciate a fast flow of water.
Any more observations from anyone?

Ahh... I had e feeling that's what it was
That's a much better solution, yes rigid pipe should be easy to come by...
As regards the flow, i have an Eheim 2012 pickup filter and I'm not entirely sure how to change the flow...

Good little filter - for the moment I can't remember if the output can be regulated (will have a look at mine later) but that could be one solution - or you could try setting it lower in the water perhaps?
The only other suggestion I can make is to get a deflector to direct the flow from the surface but your 'plant' barrier might do the trick anyway.

For your barrier maybe green straws or green tubing to hide it more.
Floating plants would be in still water also.
