Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Greenfly?!?

Having the ability to kill a plant by looking at it, I haven't ventured very far towards planting my aquariums, I really know nothing about plants at all! All that I have is some salvinia natans, a few frogbit, and hornwort in my 15l aquarium for my Siamese fighter.

I opened the lid the other day to feed "Nick," and I thought I saw a little fly, but then decided it was an uneaten flake of food because Nick devoured it! This evening there were three flys- they are 1 to 2 mm, and very pale grey/white. I think they might be greenfly, I would recognise juveniles if I saw some crawling around, but haven't spotted any. While I was looking at them, Nick again devoured one. Greedy little so-and-so! I haven't fed any live food, so I don't think they could have entered the tank that way.

Is is OK for my fighter to eat these? Should I be trying to get rid of them? Are they greenfly? Isn't it the wrong time of year for them? I am slightly freaked out and having visions of the flat being taken over by tiny flys! Help!

if they're greenfly/aphids i'd imagine they're fine for your fighter or indeed any fish. it's been a mild year so i'd say there might still be a few greenfly around, though with the leaves dropping I doubt they'll be around for long

Unless you have lots of indoor plants in a warm conservatory I doubt the flies are green fly, but whatever fly it is its good for your fish the most natural treat you could give your goldies.

I have no plants at all- that is why I am so bewildered/freaked by what these are!

But as long as they are good for the fish.....

Edit- no house plants at all. Obviously I have a pathetic few aquarium plants!

Im curious to know what these are. From what I can find they are the adult stage of blood worms. Few weeks back another member found tiny red blood worms in the substrate, seems you also have them and now they are hatching out as adult flies. Nothing to worry about, your fish will keep them under control. Look under the tank lid there may be others there.

Arghhhhhh! A dozen of the little ***** under the lid!

Aren't mosquitos the adult stage of bloodworms? Will I be bitten? Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!

I never gave live food, so how did they get in there? Unless mammy got in to lay the eggs herself! Yuck!

Yuck! In case you didn't guess I'm a bit squeamish about flys! if I was finding tiny spiders I would have no problem, but tiny flys are freaking me out!

No need to worry about those Flies, if they are from Bloodworm they are Midges but not the biting kind and they will die very soon as they are ephemeral, annual Flies.

If they aren't from. Bloodworm, they might possibly be Fruit Flies. Whatever they are, I would raise the Lid and allow them out, I use a Vacuum cleaner to get rid of Fruit flies in Summer when they are around the Fruit Bowl.
