Algae ugly???? Not any more!!!! Who wouldnt want this algae in their tank...

Speaking of algae My bogwood has black algae any ideas how to rid of it without it coming back?

I use eSHa protalom 707 Anti Algae Treatment , can be got from Newlands , cost 9.99 euro . Its a 7 day treatment and works on all types of algea. To me its the only product that works

Algae treatments will rid the tank of algae but wont stop it coming back...To stop it coming back you need to reduce NitAtes and Phosphates...In other words change more water and more often....

If you are not carrying out regular decent volumes of weekly water changes you can almost be guaranteed thats whats causing the algae...(Gravel vaccing helps as well as it cleans up uneaten food that just rots on the bottom and adds to the waste load in the water (NitrAtes/Phosphates) which algae thrives on...

The main reasons for algae growth are....

Not changing enough water on a weekly basis
Overstocking
Overfeeding
Lighting periods that are too long (8 hours should be considered max)
Aquarium is sitting in direct sunlight

You should test your water...If your NitrAtes are above 20ppm and your Phosphates are above 2ppm there is too much waste in your water....The answer is simple...Change your water in larger quantities more often...

Now if your the type of person who doesnt want to change water in large quantities on a weekly basis the alternative is to understock your tank which in turn means you feed less...

More fish = More waste = More nasty stuff in your water = Algae

When you change larger water quantities more regularly you are diluting the waste = Less algae potential

This is also really good for your fish health too...Fresh water fish LOVE fresh water (Thats what they get in nature on a regular basis)

How would you feel if you had to swim in a packed swimming pool day in day out where people were constantly peeing and pooing but the water wasnt been cleaned or changed out...........................

It's not water quality or the fact I'm over stocked, I know these are factors in algae growth my algae is just on bog wood and hard to rid of

How old are your bulbs? Old bulbs can be a factor in algae!


However it sounds like bacteria in the wood and it's just a phase of the tanks maturing to me! I had this kinda thing on a piece of wood a while back! Just 1 piece of wood out of about 10 in the tank!
