Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hiya

Im into planted tanks, but find it very difficult to find decent plants in Dublin other than fast growing stem plants, and the usual vallis etc.

Im just wondering if there is anybody else into planted tanks as a hobby and has harder to find plant species that they would either be willing to trade for other plants or to sell, or failing that does anybody know of any online plant retailers that are willing to ship to Ireland, i cant seem to find any in the UK that will post to here.

The main tank i run at the moment has 3 WPG with co2 and i dose useing the EI method and no algae :D

Any replies advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried Tropica www.tropica.com/default.asp ?

I think some of the shops get there plants from Tropica and will order specialised ones as long as you want about 50 :D

Thanks for the reply

Yes im aware of Tropica, i can only find one shop in Dublin that stocks Tropica plants, problem is, they stock the same verities all the time (about 6) and although they dont want me to buy 50 for a special order, instead they want about 50 euro per plant :D well not quite that amount but it worked out very expensive, ok i guess i will keep looking, thanks again for the reply.

Or if anybody else has any ideas or can help me id appreciate it.

Gerry Evans of Water World Aquariums maybe able to help you out.

He usually orders a large amount of plants from Tropica for tanks he designs

Gerry is usually at the ITFS meetings

Oh ok, thats really helpful, ive been meaning to try and get to a few society meetings just to check it out, i only live up the road from where they are held, and was aware they happened, but unfortunatly tuesdays have been out for me for the last 6 months or so due to other commitments, but at the end of this month i will be free again and would like to go, so maybe the first meeting in september, can anybody just walk in unannounced as it were? or do i have to be a member of the society? and what do they do at the meetings, do they have talks on different aspects of fishkeeping etc

Thanks again for your help i appreciate it, maybe i will see you down there sometime.

btw very cool website i never knew anybody did this on a large scale in Ireland, very impressive installations.

If you get a copy of practical fish keeping, there at lease two plant companies in there that post to ireland, needless to say they charge extra. I haven't tried them, I did see them while readin the mag.

Word of warning when buying plants from mail order. I have heard of at least two people who have ordered them via mail order and have recieved them as nothing more than dried leaves, it takes approximately 3-4 days to get them over at best, as opposed to two in the UK. Lack of water often gets the better of them.

Great selection of plants in Wackers of Parnell st at the moment, the tanks are full downstairs, plant heaven, all Tropica brand in great condition, just giving a heads up, i dont work there or anything, i was in their this morning buying a few things for my own planted tank.

I would say without a doubt if you are into plants and live in Dublin its definatly the shop with the most consistant quality and widest variety of plants, i think they get a new shipment every month, so 12 foot of beautiful plants to choose from each month is not bad at all.

Like i say i dont have any financial or other interest in the shop just spreading the word on the plants, its just that so few shops do any decent plants at all that i think its worth mentioning here.

I know this thread is old but just in case any of you guys are interested i've ordered plants from www.aquatics-direct.co.uk a few times now as well as other products and all arrived in excellent condition. My plants are now huge even in my 375L discus tank. I'll post some pics soon. Best of all the bulk prices are soooo cheap, i was buying one plant at a time for almost 4 euro each then i bought about 80 plants from this website for about 30 euro, granted they were kinda small but they grew really big within a month or so. I'd also reccommend for anyone who wants to keep plants but doesn't have good lighting or a co2 system to get Flourish and Flourish Excel from www.aquaessentials.co.uk and some light reflectors from the site above.
