Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

They also say Glsso is Very difficult but its more of a weed if you ask me, it grows way to quick and its easy to grow.

Marsiela hirsuta is very like glosso in apperance, it carpets the same way, its slower growing and dark green in colour, its not silver. It also works really well in low light, its under used in those setups IMHO. It will do equally as well in medium highlight setups but just grow a bit slower than glosso, which is no bad thing.

It would do well in any CO2 injected enviroment with the usual nutrients added, I don't think its a difficult plant IMHO.

Have you seen this plant around or would you buy it from the internet?

Anyway off to Wackers now to check out the new plant/fish shipment.

Well I stand corrected it is silver!

Just back from wackers and I seen it down there, I got this plant a couple of years ago from a hobbyist in the UK and grew it in one of my tanks and it was dark green....but....having said that there are many different verietys of this plant so obviously the one I had may have been different, although if you look at google images most of the examples are dark green as well. I would say the stuff from Wackers has been grown emersed ie. above ground, so once it goes through a transition period underwater it will revert back to green, could be wrong though.

Here's some examples from google images, and the last example is from Oliver Knott who is using the Tropica version of this plant and its dark green with a similar growth pattern to glosso, this is how I would recognize this plant. My best guess is that it is grown emersed and will change colour after a couple of weeks underwater.

beat you to it zig was ther yesterday, thats were i got the plant from. i had never seen it b4 and took a likeing to it when i seen it. but now i have done some searching it looks like it is a foreground plant NOT a background plant as per reading the tropica site.
i didnt realise the pics didnt load up but you have seen them first hand for yourself and i thought they would make for a stunning back drop with the silver leaves. but already today they seem to have lost that shine and have adulled out sheen more than a shine.

Its definitely a foreground type plant alright, I'd say yours is beginning to make the changeover from emersed growth to submersed growth, still a nice little plant though, first time I have seen it in the shops here as well.
