Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Beginner CO2 system was created by mattlemon (mattlemon)
I have a 300L tank with some Amazon Sword, Corksrew Vallis and a few other things in it. The plants are planted straight into gravel and I want to add a CO2 system to it, preferably not one with a pressurised system unless I have to.

Can anyone recomend a system for that size of tank and a place to get it from? I'm off to my LFS on Thursday to collect some fish so I'll ask them too just wondered if there were any unbiased opinions first :D

Tanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Look at the thread entitled ' Where to buy Co2 systems' as this has some information on different ones we discussed some time ago. Since I've never ventured into the CO2 area myself I can't be of any further help.

Regards,

Monty

Its very hard to get a system that isn't pressurised for a 300ltr tank. Most of the yeast/Sugar based systems only cover a tank up to about 100ltrs.

I looked for ages myself but ended getting a pressurised system.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

OK, thanks for the info. I was thinking after a bit more research that I'd have to go down the pressurised route :(

Thanks again !!

pardon my ignorance on the size of your tank.300l i have not had dealings with this size tank before inthis way but by what you say and i may be wrong, but it sounds like you dont have that many plants in the tank to warrent c02 at all. or may be you looking to go down the planted tank route? if you are not i would reconsider the amount of plants you have and do they realy need c02?

May your fish be with you:

Nearly all plants benifit from addition of co2. Growth rates are far in excess of those without.Tropica do a graph you can have a look at here www.tropica.dk swords tend to fail without it and a rather difficult to grow in a gravel only substrate.(try and get some root fertiliser capsules in there at least.) hydor do the best range of yeast systems in my opinion. there are also some nice tablet ones from sera not sure if anyone in this contry stocks em though..interweb might be your best bet.you can see em in action in the nano tank article in this months PFK.)my two cents.

dont make me come over there.

Just saw this thread.
Here's the rundown on CO2. If your plants are to utilize the additional CO2 you will probably alo have to increase the amount of light. Plants are not able to convert CO2 into starch without the proper amount of CO2.
you don't mention what kind of lights you have on your tanks but I am asuming a off the shelf set up here. I have a Jewel 300 and added additional light when I put in the CO2 system.
By the way there is no need for a prssurized system. Sugar/yeast set-ups are fine. Just use a few. Still a whole lot cheaper than I prssurized system from a petshop.
If you know a brewery rep. he might be able to get you a co2 bottle as used in the beer industry and a valve. A hell lot cheaper than buying a specialist system especially when it come to refilling the gas bottle.
