Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Tetra Plantamin??

Hi All,

Firstly hello as this is my first post.

I'm new to tropical fish keeping although I kept a tank back in the 80's and just got another last summer (60 litre).

I have some real plants in my tank. My LFS recommend I add some Tetra Plantamin after I asked about the plants dying off. I dose with less than the recommended amount every 4 weeks.

2 weeks ago I lost 2 tetra's and the only thing that was different with the tank than normal was me adding the Tetra Plantamin. I do my weekly water changes (10% one week, 15% the next), treat water with SafeWater, clean filter media in water removed, treat the entire tank then with SafeGuard) - this schedule as advised to me by Joe from the Aquarium Centre.

I tested the water after the fish died and the GH of the water was higher than normal.

My question is - Is it ok to add this product to the tank or do I really need it? I have the aquarium light on for 7-8 hours per day.

Thank you all in advance :)

Hi Donal, and ....Welcome to a forum:P

I'm not a big plant man myself, but will try to help.

The plantamin should be fine, your using less than the recommended dose so it shouldn't be a problem, I have a few plants in my 120ltr and don't use fertilizer at all, but probably should?? and their fine.

My only explanation in the GH change, would be the smaller the tank size the harder to maintain stable/constant parameters.

As for your tetras I really don't know if 15/20ml of plantamin could kill them.
Spreading it out over the 4 weeks might make it easier on the fish but might be no good for the plants. Someone with more plant experience can jump in and advise here better.

Maybe your doing everything right... cause remember sometimes fish just die for no apparent reason.

Sorry I can't be more definite with my answers.... but it's better than a blank page??
