Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

drop checker/Co2

I set up my tank last weekend and i'm doing 50%+ water changes every second day. I am resetting the drop checker with 4dkH and low range pH test (API)each time. After about 2 hours it goes clear. No colour what so ever. I'm not spilling it or poring it into the tank, it just fades to clear.
So i am back to the old pH/kH (pH6.05 kH 20ppm) test to determine the Co2.
Using Chuck Gadd's calculator i'm getting Co2 = 29.4ppm.
Using PFK calculator i'm getting Co2 = 26.7ppm. So which of them is right? Are either of the right?
Why is the drop checker going clear?

Ive only just set up a fire extinguisher CO2 system and am new to all this, but I put in a Drop checker and it also appeared to go clear. Then I held some white plastic behind drop checker to give a contrast and you could clearly see that it was actually green!!
....maybe worth a go...
Cheers, Dave.

Thanks for the reply Dave. The drop checker i am using has a white centre so the colour is easy to read. Thats when there is colour.
The problem seemed to be from a Co2 reactor i am using. I wasent convinced it was dissolving the Co2 quick enough so i installed a diffuser in side it and reduced the amount of Co2 going in to it.
I now run the Co2 for 8 hours at less than 1 bubble per second. This gives me 30+ppm Co2 24/7. The reactor holds the Co2 untill it breaks down in to the water completely. No Co2 bubbles floating around the tank.
I recon running the Co2 for 4-6 hours would do.
I now have a verry light green drop checker. I also have some algae from some HC dieing off. But this should clear in a couple of days. I hope.

Darren.
