Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Folks its me again,
Just wondering what plants would be suitable for a Tanagnyikan setup, very hard water and ph of 9-9.5,
I read that vallis could be used and Java fern and Moss, but is there anything else out there, for substrate and floating plants????
I want to zone my tank from rockface to rubblezone to sandy substrate to planted area hence the question

I've seen onion plants & anubias in cichlid tanks before, anubias especially is tough stuff. Thinking about putting some in my own cichlid tank.

I have java fern in the fry tank & the fish don't bother with it at all, I've not tried it in the main tank yet though.

why do you want a ph of 9-9.5?
that seems crazy high. tangs thrive and breed in a ph of 8, and its much more stable. even sea water is only ph8.2.

well according to everything i've researched on lake tanganyika it can get upto ph 10 so just want it as near to possibly ideal conditions for the fish as possible, currently at 9.2 and stable at that for last few months in my existing tank and the fish are more lively and active than i've ever seen, hence wanting this ph

Hi Guys,
After a little more research, besides Vallis there are plants called Potamogeton, which occurs in lake tanganiyka , also i heard that Java Ferns, Java Moss, Tiger Lotus, Micro Swords, Crinum calimistratum do well in these conditions, anyone hear of someone selling some or know where it can be bought over the net

Myriophyllum can be hard to grow, its delicate. Azolla will take over quickly its a floating plant that is very invasive!!!! Most shops should be able to get them, if not we can post them to you!!

Seamus,

I have a few single stems of Java fern going spare that you can have if you want to try them. No point buying loads if they're going to die. Once my tank starts growing I should have plenty on java moss too.
