Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Congratulations Zig

(and i hope you don't mind me posting this but you're too modest to do it yourself) :)

Zig has placed 15th (in the world) in the 2008 AquaDesignAmano (ADA) aquascaping contest. This is the premier contest for Aquascapers worldwide and is a major recognition of his huge talent.

Well done man. Well deserved. Post pics as soon as the rules allow?

haha right, celebrity me arse:laugh: the boys down in the ITFS meeting on a tuesday would have none of that celebrity s***e, soon put you in your place!! flower arrangeing in fish tanks for oul women I tell ya, you need to get into some of those aggressive African cichlids instead!!!!

Well yes I was sort of hoping somebody would NOT post this up because yes I am too modest:P I'm sure people are fed up saying well done zig on this board as well and here's just another one:huh:

Well it puts Ireland on the aquascaping map thats probably the most important thing here. Its a hard one to explain to my friends how position 15 is a good result, Oh you came 15th in an aquascaping competition, you mean you didn't win! oh right!

I have to say I was delighted its a big deal for me, position 15 gets you in the prizes. I was the top placed westerner in the competition as well which was pretty sweet. The competition is dominated by Asian entrants. Unfortunatly I can't post the picture of the tank that won it for me, the rules don't allow this until after the prize winning ceremony in Japan on 13 Sept 2008 (which I won't be attending btw, too expensive, flights alone about 1200 quid!) ADA then publish a picture list for of the top 27 tanks which are the prize winners, these are then published in 20 or so aquarium related magazines around the world. The pictures can be used on forums at that stage.

Thanks Andy John and CJackson, Drew the fish were perfect for the tank and still going strong, definitely the clincher mate:) thats another load of your fish I'm trying to make famous:laugh: still haven't heard about that film btw.

There's a pdf file on this link with all the contest results and details from this year.

www.adana.co.jp/index_e.php

PS Andy your going to get me in trouble over on UKaps with comments like \"Ireland does it better again\" hehe, rubbing salt into the wounds there I tell ya:laugh:

Thanks everyone.

That is excellent news, congratulation on a job well done. I'm really looking forward to seeing the pictures of the tank. I don't want to take any credit but I'm sure none of this would have been possible without the use of a certain \"ADA pipe\" brought back from foreign lands at great expense and risk to human life :P :P .

Great Job!

Nessa my prize will be fairly small, a trophy of some sort a certificate for the wall and a smal amount in prizemoney.

The main motivation is obviously not the prize money because its so difficult to win anyway you wouldn't want to be counting on that, but when you get into the top seven positions the prize money is substantial enough to get your attention. The main winner wins 1 million Yen, which is about 6000 euro, so not too bad, it would then go 5000 4000 3000 2000 and 1000 euro or something like that for the other top positions.

Thanks Seany mate, no reason you couldn't enter this next year if you get up and running, all entries are then published in a very nice book regardless of position, worth considering anyway.

Hope I haven't forgotten anyone:huh: Thanks a mil everyone, I will post the pics up asap.

Ps. a guy was caught cheating in this years competition using photoshop to add plants in etc, sort of interesting how he was caught out. One of the other competitors came across his (public) Photobucket account by accident/chance while browseing the web a day or two after the results were released, and there it all was in black and white (or colour:P ) his crime laid bare. In his photobucket account there was a step by step guide on how he manipulated the origional photo, needless to say the other competitor exposed him by putting the photos all over the web on the planted forums, caused uproar!

Said (well known, won a prize last year ) competitor hasn't been seen since. tut tut :)

Where's Father Jack for his tuppence worth on that situation!!!

oh and heres what the master said about
the 96l tank

"I gave my highest evaluation to this aquascape in ADA's International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest. The use of stones on the foreground looks very unique, and the arrangement of the stones is well-balanced. Using only Hemianthus callitrichoides "Cuba" in the entire scene is a key to the successful outcome. Presenting a wide perspective, the aquascape has skillfully completed itself at a higher level. " —Takashi Amano

i'd retire now peter, at the top of your game
