Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cheers Kev,

Im very happy with how its gone so far. The fish have settled well and aggression is relatively low so Im hopefull it works out long term. The afra's have spawned twice and nothing got torn up on either of those occasions so fingers crossed it stays that way.

Thanks for the kind words folks, much appreciated.

@ midget, those are catfish called Synodontis petricola. Great little fish, active and dont bother anything else in the tank.

Thanks for the comments folks. Here is a list of what is in the tank.

1x Alunocara baenschi Male
1x Alunocara jacobfriebergi Male
1x Alunocara stuartgranti Male
1x Firefish Male
1x Sciaenochromis fryeri Male
1x Metriaclima estherae Female
1x Otopharanx lithobates "black gold" male
2x Cyrtocara moori 1x Male 1x Female
3x Cynotilapia Afra Jalo Reef 1x Male 2x Female
4x Labidochromis caeruleus 2x Male 2x Female
8x Synodontis petricola

There was some trial and error involved to attain some balance in the aquarium and had to remove one or two fish to make it work. This is often done when people setup tanks based on rift lake species as what works for some may not work for others. There are no hard and fast rules when mixing them but there are plenty of guidelines. That said, a close watch should be kept on any newly introduced fish anyway. So far, this seems to be working out so happy days :) .

Nice list of haps and peacocks there. I removed all me mbuna recentlty for the haps and peacocks to get better food and grow on their nipped finnage from the rock dwellers. Once u throw in a few females the colours from the peacocks will shine through. It is always hard as u said to start off a malawi setup as one fish can totally change the balance. Always good to have an alpha male to keep the rest of the tank in check. My first fish in the tank was an aulonacara stuartgrant cobwe (nyasse). Never coloured up surrounded by the mbuna. Since the mbuna are gone he is the boss of the tank. Lovin it. Keep us posted Jay.

Thanks for your input Mick. Right now the stuartgranti in my tank is somewhere near the top of the chain behind the fryeri and moori males. His left eye is a bit cloudy but I think this is an injury as opposed to the onset of illness but im watching him closely. I wonder if clout would help either way now that I think of it? The afra male gets a bit rough when he is in the mood but so far his aggression is well within the levels I expected. That said, I keep a close eye on him. Ill be sure to keep you posted on the goings on here anyway.

For me the main reason to separate the mbuna was to be able to feed the haps and peacocks food with more protein in it, good old flake, pellets and the odd treat of frozen food. The NLS pellets are great for the mix of malawi fish but i did not see much growth on the fish that should be gettin bigger ie. moori, livingstoni. The mbuna are also savage feeders and would have the pellets gone in no time as well leavin less of the nls for them also. Anyway thats just my tank they are all different best of luck with the tank Jay.
