Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I remember now that I saw your posts before. Impressive setup. You could swim in it yourself.
You're probably going to tell me you do ;-)

It's really lovely to see the Arowana do a slow, full, uninterupted turn, nice.

no build diary Davyc, the tank was built on an 8" concrete slab with solid rock underneath, walls are blocks on their flat ,a continous steel reinforced lintel and pillars were cast in one go .the inside was concrete plastered, then lined with 2 layers of glassfiber with polyester resin plus topcoat.19mm glass windows were set with 21 big tubes of silicone.the 2 filter tanks 200gallon each are fed by two 4" diameter pressure chambered airlifts, each fed with 50 liters a min of air pumping bout 6000 gph each.water goes into fist filter with mechanical and bio(hundreds of pot scrubbers)then through two 6"dia returnsinto next tank of bout 300 liters of fluidised K1 then through two more 6" returns to tank.i had to mould the double 6" pipe tank connectors out of fiberglass ,took a while but seem to work well.theres also another 4"dia airlift at the other end of the tank to create circulation.oil boiler heats water through a coiled stainless steel pipe i made up ,controlled through one stat and zone valve.another zone valve and stat heats radiators in fish houue a couple of degrees warmer than tank to stop any condensation.it has drip feed water change with overflow, maintenance is usually 10 minutes a week.
If you want something similar built give me a shout. B)

Lovely tank mate, would love to do something like that in the future. It got me reading on the net about these type of tanks, just finished reading about a guy in the States that built a 2600 gallon tank. He seemed to have no end of problems getting the tank water-tight. Did you have any issues with that?

thanx Bill
i had no bother sealing the glass to the fiberglass, these materials work well with silicone, acrylic can be tricky to seal aswell as some of the liquid rubber linners.if you read up on other peoples builds its well worth ago,for me i wanted to keep biggish s.american cats and central american cichlids, its great for the cats and find next to no aggression between cichlids.the tank when seen from above is like a u shape giving an area out of sight from other fish if they want.i wouldn,t have second thoughts about building something similar or larger again :)
