Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've had a great week in fish keeping. Firstly on Tuesday i noticed something that resembled an Otto fry scurry across the bottom of a tank. Since i was on the way out at the time i hadn't got a chance to investigate further.
It turns out it was a young Parotocinclus jumbo (LDA25). I couldent find were the eggs were but fry just kept appearing throughout the week.
Fry in a tea spoon;

I had also noticed that 2 female Hisonotus notatus (otocinclus notatus)were looking plump. This was not unusual and they normally go back to a slender body in a day or two. But not this time.
Surprise, surprise. They bread today.
The short version of events;
s11.photobucket.com/albums/a171/platty25...ent=producingegg.flv

If you look closely you can see her laying an egg. What you cant see on the vid. is the male excreting his milt into her mouth. He dose this just before the egg is laid.
I couldent figure out how the eggs were been fertilized untill i was on the phone to another forum member that suggested she could be taking it in the mouth and passing it through the gills directing it towards the egg. Fair play Daragh i think you are right.

So i have the fry of these two and some fry from starlight bristlenose to feed for a couple of weeks.
Happy day's.:cheer:

Congratulations, you deserve a good run after all the water problems you had to contend with.

The method of fertilisation for the ottos is similar to the cory T-position, and it is speculated for corys that this is how the female directs the milt over the eggs, but there is a big \"but\" with corys it is usually not until after the T-position that the egg is laid, so does the female hold the milt then release it over the eggs and if so how does she breath for those couple of minutes. The alternative suggestion is that she ingests the milt and fertilises the egg internally, though I think that is unlikely as she would only need to do that once and not for each couple of eggs laid. So still a bit of a mystery, but excellent videos like that contribute greatly to the understanding of different species behaviour patterns. You will have to do a wiki entry on all those fish now :-)

Great news on all three recent successful spawnings. Now if you could send a cup or two of that magic water this way I would be happy :-)

Cheers people. The pic. i put up was the wrong one. It wasent meant to be so blurry.
I see what you mean Daragh but the female has the egg half out before she takes the milt from the male. The vid. was the quickest i seen it happen. For her to pass it through her gills and directing it onto the egg makes sense. There wouldent be time for her to ingests and fertilize the egg. Also this happens for each egg.
This is the long version.
The female would clean an area roughly 1cm square. She would push the egg out slightly and i think this is were she releases pheromones. The males in the tank go ape and locate her verry quickly. The male climbs all over her going berserk. She pushes her head into the middle of his body (as seen in the vid)and pushes the egg out fully without releasing it. She then some how lets the male know when to release his milt which she takes in her mouth. Just after the takes the milt she sticks the egg to the glass or plant.
She dose this every 10-30 min. and only one egg at a time.
This all started about 48 hours ago but i just put it down to the weather making them a bit nutty.
A while back i had some Otocinclus affinis that were carrying on this way with the smaller(male) going berserk dancing all over the larger(female) one so i removed him from the tank. Doh!. Now i know why he was going berserk, he just wanted some action.
