Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Had to launch operation Shrimp Rescue last night when I discovered my new orange shrimp were no longer in the tank. I correctly guessed they had got into the juwel filter box, so I spent a fun filled hour fishing out shrimp that did not want to be caught with a tiny net in the bottom of a filter I could not angle myself to see into. Great fun altogether.

Anyway, while I was at it I decided to give the tank a good spring clean and removed all rocks and stirred up the sand etc, as this was the Zebra tank I took the oppurtunity of filming them because it will probably be another three months before I see them again. Shy would be an understatement!

PS. None of the orange shrimp feature in the video as they are about a quarter the size of the amano shrimp they just seemed to dissapear when I realised them back into the tank. If they have managed to get back into the filter, although I think I sealed the gaps, I hope they have a long and happy life in there, I am not going in after them again!

The first two I got in Whackers Parnell Street around Oct 2006 and the balance were from a breeder in Ireland about 6 months later. They were bred them from wild caught parents. Unfortunately he has left Ireland now and as far I know there is no one breeding them here, he tool the adults with him :( The shops can get them time to time from German wholesalers, but they cost a fortune. There are several successful breeders in the UK, they are not much cheaper from there either.

They are a fantastic looking plec, when you get the see them, they are incrediably shy, extremely slow growing and very fussy about water conditions. They also require higher temps than most trops. Because of that and shyness there are really no other suitable tankmates. I have only recently introduced the shrimp as a clean up crew. Having said all that I still love them and llok forward to trying to spawn them when they are big enough.

I'm green with envy, they are fantastic fish.

I remember when you bought the original two in Wackers, I legged it over on my lunchbreak just to see them and Gavin told me they were gone.

I hope you get them breeding at some stage.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

Sorry about that Peter. You were not the only one dissapointed. Gavin was not there when I went in and I bought them from one of the other guys, Gavin had said he would not have sold them as they had just come in and there was a guy woming from Waterford to see them, He would have held them for me ok. But I didn't know any of that so I guess some guy had a long wasted trip :(

I just get exasperated at how slowly they grow. Although it is encouragind to see that there are two clearly larger guys, which at least one of is definitely from Whackers and therefore about 6 months older. On that basis the other ten should put on a bit of a spurt over the come six months.

The guy from Waterford (Patrick Drummy)made a trip to the UK shortly afterwards and got some zeb's.
I think Gavin was a bit put out that they were sold when he came back to work. They were to stay in the shop for at least 2 weeks because they dont like to be moved so much at a young age.

No problems, but at the size they are at it will be a couple or even three years!
