Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have used vimeo to host as it hosts in HD, but if it takes too long to load and play I will upload regular version to YouTube tomorrow.

Daragh were can I get Shrimp like in the video? I'm after any shrimp other than Amano. I would really like some Cherry or Bee shrimp. I can't get them in any of the LFS, only Amano shrimp.

well done daragh that is the best video quality i've ever seen of shrimp on the internet. the fan shrimp in particular is brilliant and the clarity and detail on the smaller shrimps is tops.
i've watched it several times and am going back to have another look now.

Great vid. Daragh. Crystal clear. I watched in both HD and normal. HD is a bit jumpy on my end.
The cherry shrimp had a lucky escape from the fan shrimp.
The Garra do look like a pair and the angels look great.
Well done.:)

I have heard from a few people that the video was stuttering on vimeo.com, it could be the internet connection or the PC, it is best to press pause at the start and then let the grey bar get well across the screen before pressing play again. If it stutters then I think it is the video card on the PC you are watching from, you can also click the HD logo to turn High Definition off.

Here is the same video on YouTube, it is 17 times smaller so should cause no problems, but you lose the detail :(

To my knowledge they have not been bred.... yet. I am sure someone it working on it. I imagine they would want cooler water with a very high turnover, I will try and organise a tank for them somethime, but I would like to try and find out more first.

Regarding weddings, I am always looking for fish weddings and the resulting fry, but if you are refering to the human variety, No I don't. Did one once, that was enough. Photography is a hobby and I don't want to be getting into stressful situations and making it more like work and believe me shooting a wedding is stressful. Can you imagine going back to the bride and groom and saying the photos aren't great can you arrange it all again for next week :-)

I just noticed that YouTube offer a HD version too, click WATCH IN HD bottom right hand corner, it is half the size of the Vimeo version but much better than the standard YouTube version.

the music was well chosen, nice and unobtrusive. the vid played perfectly for me on vimeo.
the primitive looking fan shrimp was like something you'd see on an attenborough program. i showed the vid to several non fishkeepers and they were amazed.

As you know my mother has a habit of giving names to some of the fish, the only current stock with a name is that fan shrimp - she called him Joesph for some totally unknown reason, she watched the video and is convinced that those shrimps are the inspiration for road sweeping machines!!!! Personally I don't see it but who am I to argue with a woman that names a shrimp "Joesph"

Not a fan of Chinese Algae eaters :-)

There is hope no matter where you live, there is another member here that has just got Eircom broadband in the last few weeks after waiting for two years or more for Eircom to realise there is a population beyond the pale.

well daragh, u did'nt answer my question about the shrimp.
just having another look at the 2 vids with some visitors and they suggested that at the show we could have a big screen and play these and other new ones for the benefit of the visitors and we could have someone available to answer queries.
i reckon this is a good idea, esp with the advent of hd and its improved clarity.

I did not answer your question ... yet ... as I will have to check and I just lent you my book on shrimps :-) I could say what I keep mine at but that may not be the ideal parameters. I will post later on.

Regardign showing these or any other videos, that's a good idea, we have the projector and screen and I am sure other users would submit photos and video clips too.

according to what i've read shrimps are quite adaptable and suggested ph of between 6 to 8, and temp between 19 to 27 c. which is very broad. i'll have a good read of the book later but i was curious to know what works best for u. as your specimens are obviously thriving.

The conditions I keep the Amano, Cherry and Crystal Shrimps are generally the same as most of my South American tanks with soft water (TDS 70 - 150ppm), pH 6.4.-6.8 and temp around 76F. However some shrimp are more hardy or fussy than others. In my experience they are all sensitive to poor water conditions and a nitrate spike will wipe out a tank full of shrimp, possibly even before any fish show stress. In order of hardiness I would put them as Amano / Cherry / Crystal.

The Crystal particularly can not tolorate high temps and should not be kept above 78F and would be in danger above 80F. At higher temps (above 78) they will stop breeding and cease to thrive. Their lower range would be around 72. they like a narrower pH than the others too, soft acidic water pH 6.0 - 6.8.

The Cherrys while a little hardier are still fairly delicate, there temp range would be 72 - 84F. They will tolerate a wide pH range of 6.0 - 8.0, but do best when not at either of those extremes.

Finally I would class Amanos IME as the most hardy, with temp 70-84F pH 6.0 - 7.2.

If they are happy the Cherry and Crystal will breed regularly and the Amano females will be seem carrying thousands of little eggs under their tails - unfortunately it is not practical to raise the amano as they require a cycle or fresh / saline / fresh water as they develop.

Remiinder: All shrimp can not tolerate copper treatments.

The Giant African Fan shrimps is currently in a tank pH 6.8 100 TDS and 78F and seems to do fine, I can not having found ideal parameters for them, but as I say he is doing fine where he is.

The Macrobrachium (long-arm shrimp) have bred in pH 6.5, 74F, 70TDS I have been unable to locate ideal conditions for them anywhere and played around with several parameters before they bred, having said that I have no reason to believe that they would not have bred at different levels, future experiments may confirm that.
