Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Got these from Wackers Long Mile Road.

I have wanted Altums for a long time, but you don't see them very often, in fact I have only ever seen them once before! They are tiny as you can see, which fascinates me as that makes it a lot less likely that they are wild caught, their condition seems too good for while caught altums too. However if they are tank bred, that makes them very interesting as there are very very few authenticated reports of successful tank breeding.

There is the possibility that they are not pure altums, maybe a Peruvian Altum (P. Scalare) crossed with a wild altum ??? Any opinions welcomed. While I would like them to be true altums, I would not be too worried if they are not, they are definitely different from P Scalare of any variety I have seen and I think they will grow up to be handsome fish.

They are in a 2 foot Q tank for the moment, but I will move them on to a much larger tank shortly and some of them are only on B&B at the moment and will be moving on to another fishkeeper in the near future...

Very good video (as usual Daragh) - they are nice looking little lads, very well captured too.

Great soundtrack - back in the days before Queen became just "Freddie Mercury with backing group".

Well done Daragh as usual, they all look fantastic, happily eating away.

How many of them are there, I think I counted 12, most people would get 4 or 6 and hope they have a pair but they look great with the larger group.

Best of luck with them……………………….B)

Nice daragh ! How small are they? With the looks of the plant pot they are less than an inch. Is that Indian almond leaves on the bottom?

Queen was Freddie Mercury with two seriously talented members and two average musicians, now who is who :-) And who is the mystery person!

Tom

There are 18 in there. But as a I said I am baby shitting some before they head south for the Winter. Based on a couple of wild angel forum horror stories I was expecting a survival rate of about 50%, however so far things are going very well. One died, but he looked pretty weak from the start and one other looks a little frail, apart from that I am hoping the rest will be fine, which I think is great and far better than I expected.

Ian

They are small, that plant pot is a typical small Tropica pot and yes that is an almond leaf. If you trimmed off all the fins they would be about the size of 20c to 50c coin.

very nice, daragh. they are feeding well which is always a good sign. they certainly have the look of altums although i've never before seen them at that size. i assume they are tank raised as i doubt wilds would survive capture etc. at that size.

Dont look tall enough for true wild altums, IMO (dont have the upturned snout either, true altums swim with their fins almost vertical), but very nice fish!!!! Most likely peruvian altums, which are stunnning if grown up in a tall tank!!!!!!!Altums that size IMO would be very poor at shipping, altums are poor shippers even when adult!!!! Could also be German bred..........

The word coming back from the altum forums I have posted to are that they are real altums. As I said I would not be terribly upset if they weren't. They look like they will grow out to be nice angels anyway, but if they are the real altum I will take that as a bonus. As they grow a bit I will post a few more photos and maybe things will become a bit clearer.

Great pic Darragh, stunning. Would be very interested how you get on with them. What fish are you planning on keeping them with?

The plan is for a species tank only. I might add a few Starlight Bristlenose youngsters to act as a clean up crew as they grow on a bit, but that would be about it. Thankfully these angels are eating from the bottom too, so dropped food is not a major problems, some angels won't take food from the bottom at all.

Yes, I must go and visit them soon, they moved to a much bigger tank and Dessie kitted it out with a ton of plants so I would say they are happy out.

I never copped that typo at all :-)
