Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok, prepare yourself for some dodgy video skills. If you think the camerawork is bad you should see my pictures…

Click pictures to see the vids.

Especially for Mick and Pete, T. Lineatus feeding. Plus other tanks in my blair witch project style filming ;)

Still hungry so one more. Who could resist that face...

The African cichlid tank comes out very dark in the vid so hard to see the fish. The fish in all of the vids seem to look much smaller than they actually are. The biggest Venustus must be 9 or 10 inches.

The tank is mostly big haps with some yellow labs and a solitary big Jack Dempsey plus several bristlenose plecs.

The tank with the big Giraffe cat is mostly a holding tank for fish I've picked up, most of which are destined for the 900 litre tank. There are all sorts in here from datnoids, catfish, cichlids, not a mix I'd keep together normally but they will be spread out properly soon.

There are more fish in this tank that you can't see than the ones you can...
The tank has been fed really heavily to get the datnoids feeding so needs cleaning every couple of days.
Looking forward to spreading the fish out as it’s a pain at the moment.
Think I'll use this tank to grow out a group of datnoids once I've cleared the others out.

Redhead cichlid
This guy is a bruiser, about a foot long, still in QT. This is his temporary home, moving to 900 litre tank as soon as its cycled. Hard to get a good side on shot of him but this fish is a stunner. His only fault is a little niche gone out of his dorsal which seems permanent unfortunately.

There is another 120 litre tank in this room which holds old fish that arent able for the pace any more & fry, its scruffy at the moment as there are loads of apple snail eggs on the hood & I'm trying not to disturb them.

Hope you like them and apologies again for the camerawork...
-Patrick

Savage!! That Fahaka! She is a beauty Pat. I love your African setup. Been thinking about setting up an mbuna tank myself but have put in on the long finger for now. Do you think that the Aro will be ok in their with that Redhead? A pal of mine has one and they can be a mean oul cichlid, nice though. The Giraffe cat is a cracker too mate, fair play to ya ;) .

great vids cheers, but would the puffer not be able to get trough the closed shells (or would this be a bad idea water chemistry and fish health wise) what size tank is that he's in

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Glad you like them guys :)

Drew - the Fahaka is the only fish I wouldn't be without, I could never sell this fish.. She has grown a lot since I got her from you almost 2 years ago.

Jay - you should go for the mbuna setup. They can look stunning. I'll set one up again at some stage in the future, I'm growing on a dozen little yellow labs with this in mind. RE: the Redhead, I'm really not sure how he'll work out. My intention is to put him in with the Aro early one weekend and watch him for the whole day. Any sign of aggression and I'll take him out. I'd hate to get rid of him though, you just don't see fish that size very often.

Dar - the puffer can get through the closed shells but it takes ages as they're hard to get a grip on. It ends up with them firing out of her mouth like bullets so I open them these days for safety's sake. Once she has eaten most of the meat from the shells she will smash them up trying to get the little bits of meat off so this will cover what she needs to keep the teeth worn down. Tank is 240 litres which should do a few years yet. Max size for these fish is 18 inches though they're rarely seen at that size.

You have some lovely fish Patrick, and obviously well looked after.

It's great to see the tanks set up instead of racks.
