Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey folks. Heres a quick clip of my marine setup. The Remora is the one from FFF, and according to Gav is sorely missed by his regulars :P . The rest of the inhabitants are skittish around the camera but this guy thinks its feeding time again. Enjoy, and all comments welcome.

Cheers lads. Yeah, he is a bruiser and has an awesome appetite. @ Derek...I wish :) . I hope to upgrade to a larger system within a year or so as from what Ive been reading they can hit a meter in length. I dont expect him to reach that size though as the previous owner said he has been the size he is now for over a year. I do however have a puffer in mind and will need a larger system to accomodate them. In the meantime Im really enjoying looking after him, and his tankmates. He gets on well with them all, but feeding is a bit of an art now  .

Nice one Jay.

Rockwork looks nice and clean too, would have expected Algae problems from the waste produced by the big fish. How are you finding it maintenance-wise? What are you running in the external filter?

P.s. Are you planning on keeping the yellow tang? Doesn't seem to fit your taste when looking at the other oddballs you have.

Cheers,
Patrick

@ Patrick,

I need to clean the glass evey other day but other than that, maintenance is a doddle. The rock has never really given me algae problems, even when it was under the Betta T5 unit which I removed when I decided to go FOWLR. Strangely enough, the coraline seems to be doing better under the T8's. Any idea as to why that might be? When doing the wc's I unhook one of the powerheads and use it kinda like a leaf blower over the rock to remove the cr@p that settles on it. Seems to work pretty well. The system gets a 25% wc every weekend, If im not hanging ;) . In the filter Im running Rowaphos in conjuntion with PhosEX Ultra which I replace avery 8 weeks. Im pretty strict when it comes to feeding and anything refused is immediately removed but given the nature of the new guy I rarely need to go in with the claw to pick up after them.

The gf fell in love with the Tang when she saw them in that savage reef setup out in Gav's. "It will add colour to the tank"...sigh. I do love Tangs and although it gets along fine with the others, its just a little bit too "pretty" given what Im keeping. Im gonna convince her to let it go if she wants to see a Spiny Puffer in there any time soon. She will melt when she sees one of those up close ;) .

@ Johney,

Glad you like it pal. Im very happy with it. I know its probably not the most beautiful setup out there but Im really in it just for the fish right now and lovin it.

@ Brian,

Thanks for the comment mate, yeah this fella had no probs getting down to business at all. He was in there an hour before he came out begging  .

Thanks for the feedback guys...

Between 600 and 800ltr for the marine setup. The Tang and Soldierfish are going to a new home today and I will be collecting the Puffer later. Ill be left with the Remora, Trigger and the Puffer and the Moray. The Trigger has a bit of growing to do but other than that the rest are pretty much the size there gonna get in the home aquarium, bar the moray who I hope puts on another 6" or so. So for the time being, tanksize isnt an issue but I plan to seriously upgrade in the near future anyway and be done with it.

So the Tang and Soldierfish are gone. Unfortunately the Soldierfish is gone forever, as I left him in a bag for 45 mins and returned to find it dead. Damn near lost the tang too. Kicked myself all day yesterday  . Bigger the fish, the quicker the air runs out...lesson learned. On a more positive note, I have aquired a cracking DogFace Puffer in Seahorse. Its totally grey with black spots, a type I havnt seen before, exept in books. He is only about 5" so has a good bit of growing to do. Thre was actually a Spiny Puffer out there too but it was small and didnt want to risk it in my setup. Ill post a clip and a few pics when he is settled. The Trigger is giving him a bit of a hazing but he took food today so Im hopeful all will be well soon.

Hard luck Jay, I lost several big fish like this when I moved house a few years ago & it was rough....

Congrats re: the puffer. Re: the colour AFIK they go through several colour phases from juvenile to adult. Juvies are black with white spots (I think...) No time for googling but worth checking out

Thanks Patrick, I had always seen the the larger ones with a yellow colouration to the skin, and others that were kinda blothchy but never a totally grey one. Whilst researching them a while back I found out there were different naturally occuring colour morphs but now that you mention this I will dig a little deeper and see what I come up with. Cheers bro ;) .

@ Mark,

Yeah it was simply a matter of being too complacent while I was rushing around trying to get the whole fish swap done, getting the Puffer on hold and on top of all that, doing the school run. The new guy is quickly becoming my favorite fish. Great little character and some set of jaws. The bugger bit through the net when the girl in Seahorse attempted to catch him so they had to give me a bucket with a lid in case he bit through the bag on the way home  .
