Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My angels recently spawned but ate eggs after a few days as per usual. But a few days later it is as if the female has turned on the male, who is much larger than her. She pushes him in a corner up against the filter and starts to beat the crap outta him  She wont allow him out to feed and he has to resort to just grabbing morsels as they drift by him. And then recieve anothe beating off her :hammer: This is being going on for the last two days and although there is no bad damage as yet, he has lost a few scales off his left side. Sould i seperate them or will this violence stop soon?
Regards, Joe.

He must have forgotten her birthday !

My rams do this as well when a spawning goes wrong. I wonder if it's a mechanism to get rid of an unfit male with the failure of the spawning being a measure?

My male has places to hide and once the female is good to go again she lets up, but if your male is losing scales and it's not improving, you'll need at least to give him a break from it and separate them for a while if you have the space

looks like you've got a hyperdominant female there, she probably is attacking him as she may have moved the eggs and is defending them, in this situation i would recommend seperating them and introducing the male when breeding is required otherwise he could end up with bad injuries or worse still dead. if you dont have a spare tank make sure there is plenty of cover out of the females line of sight and this should reduce the aggression

Thanks guys, if this behaviour hasn't eased by tomorrow. I will move the male to another tank for a break ha ha. It’s just strange that this violence started as they have spawned maybe 6 or 7 times before without incident

sounds like my relationship, so i have the experience to deal with this..tell him to kip on the sofa for a few months till things blow over. she might be annoyed that he is useless and hasn't successfully spawned a brood yet. is he eating the eggs? i'd imagine that would annoy females

Not sure who is eating the eggs, it usually happens over night or while I am at the shops ha ha. Would replacing one of them be an option? My second tank is only a small 50 litre that I use as a hospital tank with no plants, substrate or ornaments. I don't think it would be a very comfortable fit for a 6inch fish?

Ok when I got home today I was watching proceedings and the female is still going at the poor male. She seems to be trying to go for his eye. So as a temporary fix iv split the tank using a bit of plastic. Iv left an inch gap top and bottom for other fish and water flow to pass. She is now ramming into it trying to get at poor Damo, bad Suszane! (fair city ref.)

Female is on the left and male on the right. Breeding site is usually the filter or slate beside filter.
Sorry for poor Photo quality :(

Yep she got over it alright  so I have raised it up a little and put the male on the left instead. He doesn't seem as intent on crossing over, prob glad of a little peace.

In the long term, I'd say you might need to split them up, permanently

Yea I'm thinking that myself. Its a shame to split a breeding pair. I wonder if she will want half the tank in the divorce

Unfortunately you are witnessing a 'rogue' female Angel.
In the wild (although your Angels are far removed from 'Wild' fish) this pair would just split and each would look for another mate - or possibly 'reunite' at a later date.
But in our tanks there is no provision for this, the aggressor can continue until the 'mood' subsides or it kills the other one.
I have seen this many times with Cichlids, from Dwarfs up to Discus - and beyond.

For what it's worth, my suggestion would be to remove the female to your hospital tank and leave the male in the large tank and let him recuperate fully.
Then, and only then, would I replace the perspex and watch carefully how they behave - when they (hopefully) accept one another (you'll know the difference from the aggressive behaviour you see now) try removing the barrier after the lights are turned off.
In the morning, if all's 'lovey-dovey' you can leave the partition out - but if she has returned to her aggressive behaviour then I would get her out and start looking for a different female!

If she's that aggressive, I dont think they'll be doing much breeding :)

Yes think i will have to swap her for a calmer female. Hope thats ok with my LFS. Its a shame really as I have her well over a year now, brought her up from a little juvenile about an inch in size. You do get attached :-((

I wouldnt get rid of her, a hyper dominant female like yours generally raises great fry as she protects vigourously, try to get her a hyper dominant male instead of the wimpy one you have at the moment or just seperate the male till shes in condition again, re introduce them and when spawning occurs whip him out to a spare tank, i had a female that went through 3 males until i got a hyper dominant male to match her temper, and the regularly breed away no problems.
