Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Rams breeding story... ;-)

Some time ago I'w started to looking for good quality rams for breeding- not those mega-coloured and oversized "specimens" that can be bought in local shop's and are imported from East. They looks good but without plenty of de-wormer they won't last long in the tank....
Anyway I got brilliant female of Electric Blue

She was just perfect from the start, but now she is even prettier ;-)
After that it was time to look for good male for her (not from the same breed). For long time I couldn't got Electric male matching my standards.... I gave up on that and I got two young males from home breed- one from Czech another straight from Germany (whoa!). Two of them are from German Blue form.
My perfect Electric female choose young male from Germany and they become a happy couple ;-)
.
Later I got two gold females from Local shop- and they are supposed to be the weakest point of the bunch, but surprisingly after quarantine, de-worming etc, they are doing perfect!
But what is really curious- Two gold females and a male from Czech formed couple/ threesome ;-)...
This weird relationship is quite strong and since they meet and liked each other they have spawn 7 or 8 times. Females are taking turns for laying eggs (7-10 days difference). Doesn't matter which female has laid eggs- all three of them are guarding nest and behave like normal careful couple of Rams!

Anyway for the moment I have 2 offspring's from Electric Blue x German Blue and 2 offspring's from Gold Ram x Gold Ram x German Blue Ram.

The most problematic point is to keep (raised artificially) eggs to hatching and avoid them going white. They were well fertilized as they were turning white after first 20 hours or so. But after I figured it out how to eliminate a risk of eggs moulding it all become easier. (and it is even more difficult than treating Discus eggs...)
From the Electric x German blue eggs- more than 90% hatched successively and gave strong offspring. They were happily feeding on micro worms and brine shrimp after first week.
Gold Ram x German Ram are little more problematic due to weaker gens of gold females and I'm getting only about 30- 50% offspring surviving first week.

Offspring from first spawn's are 3-4 weeks old now and they are putting up weight fast ;-) so happy days!

I'd like to get some nice Electric male and Gold male, but for now I will wait for my own offspring as I don't want to destabilise this special harmony between my two pairs- well, 5 crazy rams ;-)

Hope, everything goes well and soon enough I will enjoy some nice new colour variations of my own breed Rams.
Along with two lines of Rams my breeding tanks are quite busy at the moment with young and growing up Angels (wild strain), Cockatoo's, Peacock Goby's and Kribs.
Plenty of work and plenty of Artemia has to be involved ;-)
I will try to get some more pics of young rams soon.

At the moment when I'm writing this Electric and German are laying eggs again ;-)

Ps- My 5 cents to comply my promise- @ Acara, Thanks again for micro worms a while back ;-)

Great work Tomi! They really are a beautiful fish. I had a nice couple that have sadly passed away. Got them to spawn a few times, which hatched to wrigglers, but because they were in a community tank they didn't survive. Its great to see someone doing this. Keep us updated!

Guys, next time (with a little bit more time)I will post it here.
@ SouthAfricanInIreland- you can keep 2 pairs once you have natural "border" on the middle of the tank (wood, big plant etc)
Talk soon...

Well done Tomi. Are you saying you need to treat for worms even when you get them from a Breeder?
