Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Yay, my young convicts, have laid their first eggs

Congratulations, nice to see the fry in the tank :) Usually do a double take as it initially looks like the adult fish are kicking up dirt when you see them at first, only on closer inspection do I usually see that its actually fry

Just thought i'd post a short update, i had a few peeps today to check on the eggs and to my surprised they were all gone, but after observing the female it seams she has moved the eggs, i assume this because she is extremely protective still over something deeper in the "cave" and still fans the water a lot but i don't see anything, is this possible? Or have the eggs become someones snack and the female is suffering from somekind of dillusion that her eggs are still there?

I'll keep a close eye on the mother and what she does and let you all know.

Well ladies and gents, as promised i have been keeping an eye on my parent convicts and today for the first time, have proof that my very young (2") female and (3") male deserve a lot of credit, they have proven that they indeed are very good parents, I'm very proud, saw a few of them wriggling around between the small gravel stones, its truly amazing so they will have to wait a while longer before i change tanks, no problem though, at least i'll be sure the new tank will be thoroughly cycled, i'll keep you all updated how the parents and wrigglers are doing...

WOW! Guys i got home a checked on the little ones and there are 100's of little fry swimming around, i'm really surprised at how well they are doing, any way heres another video clip of them swimming around, as an update though i have noticed a major reversal of rolls though, i'm finding that its the father that is watching the fry and the mother is spending more time patrolling the tank, i was wondering if any one has experienced this with their cichlids?

My female doin a lot of the patrols and the chasin. My pair have stopped breeding. I have 2 clarias catfish in with them for a while just to keep down the fry and the convicts have stopped completely.

Wow, they've stopped completely? Didn't think that was possible, but then again i have a similar plan, just hope its not a complete dead stop, still want a few fry every now and then  any way apart from my convict pair i'll have a pair of bristlenose pleco's, still deciding if i want anything else, in the tank! Just not sure what, i'm worried that there isn't anything else, any ideas?

Just a quick update folks, the parents are surprising me every day with their extremely good parenting, these two have a full brood here easy a hundred fry if not more, all are very adventurous and growing like weeds, the parents are tireless always on their toes and always ready to do what is necessary.
Today the whole family or should i say school went walkabout, the fry literally in packs all over the drift wood hoovering what ever it is they are eating off the drift wood, and doing it in what i can only describe as platoons, groups of 10 sometimes 20 all in neat lines and columns, a true sight to behold, these guys are gonna need new homes soon so any body looking for strong healthy little convics, please drop me a pm they are there for the taking and all for free (donations are of course always welcome :P ) those of you that fall into the bracket of sponsors, and are looking to stock up with these fine "starter" cichlids are welcome to scoop them up too, the only catch is they will need to be collected as i don't yet have a car, i'm situated in Leixlip on the border of county kildare and county dublin just off the M4 motorway
