Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I think you display a degree of false modesty Xeon, that's a more-than-acceptable picture (and if you have some to spare I could be in the market...but not for a couple of weeks).

My knowledge of L-numbers is about as good as my knowledge of swimming.....not much at all.

I still call 'em all plecs (well.....not Panaques etc)

Thank you all.

It's funny about this species as I always tought that they were a selective breeding L number but since a few months back I am a little bit confused as I seen one available on a list of 100% wild fish from South America. The funny part is that he was as little money as 3 x l046 zebra plecs :o . Either nature at work, either someone was playing. I guess I'll never find out.

Very nice little lads!

To my understanding we are talking about two or more different species.

There is the true L144 that was only imported once, from Paraguay. The species seems paler or “duller” in colour than most fish sold as L144. Any true L144 would come from offspring of this fish.

Ancistrus sp. 4 is a different, line bred fish often sold as L144 which is more yellow in colour and most likely is a form of the common Ancistrus (which in itself potentially could be a mix of species).

Edit: The information above is based on various sources including: www.l-welse.com, www.planetcatfish.com, www.bristlenoseworld.com as well as Ingo Seidels L-Catfishes, and it is NOT based on my own observations (apart from comparing photographs :) ). The naming varies slightly, planetcatfish calles the line bred fish Ancistrus sp. 4, Seidel calls it Ancistrus sp and L-welse simply discusses it under L144 but the general story seems to be the same.

The fish on the list could really be any species of Ancistrus lacking darker pigmentation, or could be the true L144. I believe any wild fish with abnormal colouration would fetch high prices and as the true L144 is so uncommon that would probably drive the price up even more.

Either way the fish sold as L144 are lovely looking in my opinion, whatever species they belong to.

I was just wondering as well roughly what length the parents are?

Andreas

Hi Andreas

The parents are pretty young, they are only around 7-8 cm. I have another male at about 10 cm. Seems that all bristlenoses went for it now. I have fry from the L144 again, from the long fin and tail brown, from the albinos the calicos and lot's of fry from the normal browns.
