Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So the first batch of fry are about 2 weeks old . When i replaced the female in the big tank , the 2 males decided to fight for breeding rites and unfortunately the original breeding male lost the battle and is gone to the big fish tank in the sky . However , this morning before i left for work , this is the sight that greeted me !!!!
She's a harlet i tell ya !!

I have no spare tank space at the moment so in a week or so when i seperate her , she will be going back into that tank until she spits this new brood .
Question i have is , i know she won't feed while she's holding , but when she spits out the new brood , will the older fry be under threat from her ??
the father of this brood is a different male to the last time will this make a difference ?? . Would i be better putting her in the 60 litre tank immediately to get her used to the older fry maybe ??
I can't leave her where she is , cos the fry wouldn't last 5 minutes in the tank she's in due to predation from other tank mates .
Any advice would be great .
Thanx in advance folks
Martin

You're finding one of the hazards of breeding easily-bred cichlids which has beset many for years - I suppose the question is - how many do you want?
As you have discovered, they breed 'at the tip of a hat' and, as with Convicts, become less-easy to find new homes for.
But...to your question:
These really are (I know making such generalisations can be dodgy) attentive mothers who really do have an enormously strong maternal instinct so if you move her to the tank with the fry she might (when ready) release her new brood and leave the older ones untouched, but by the same token she could attack the older ones as being a threat to her 'newcomers'. I'm inclined to suggest you put her in and see what her reaction to her previous fry is - ie does she make threatening 'drives' at them.
One last thought is - how large will the older fry be by the time she's ready to release the new batch? They might just be a threat to them themselves!
Sorry for not being able to be more help, but this really is a case of being 'damned if you do and damned if you don't'.
Does anyone else have any suggestions to help Martin with his quandary?

I'm thinking a tank divider might be a good idea , to keep her on one side , and the existing fry on the other , then just use it as a grow on tank .
Thanks again
