Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Make sure your cave is big enough for both of them to fit with only one entrance as the male stays guard over the eggs. My bristles spawned in a community tank with ph 8 water temp 26c I think the ideal conditions are 7 with warmer water but thats not always the case. I put the cave in a breeding net after a week to catch some fry before they are eaten in my 240. The parents are great with the fry and do not eat them.
If you have spawn and the male abandons them put them in a net near the outflow of the filter as this will give a constant flow of fresh water on the eggs. Keep in cave if possible. (Angel cichlid gave me that tip when I first tried spawn them.
Also keep in mind that you may only get brown ancistrus something to do with the genes someone explained it to me before can't really remember.
I first spawned mine in a 30l tank.
Currently breeding in 240l now.
...Also if some of my information is incorrect other members will let you no. I'm only breeding these 4 months with 4 spawns so I'm not the most experienced just taught I'd try help.

My community tank consists of angels, bronze corries, sterbai corries and opaline gourami's the angels are the fish that pose a threat as they are big but my fry are smart they stay under the bogwood. So like hammie said Your safe with corries.

Yea the coconut shud work I forgot about that i don't think the bottom matters I seen a video on youtube of a pair breeding on a glass bottom the camera was under the tank that might have been a coconut as it was round. Your on the right track... My two females are completely different sizes one gives 20 - 25 eggs and the other gives 80 - 100 so you might only see a few until she grows but the batches should increase in number each time.
It's more of a plate on bare bottom. I've bred them in sand and gravel they don't seem picky could take a couple days could take a month.
I hope it works out. Keep us posted if/when you get lucky.

I just defrost whatever peas are in the freezer - deshell them and mash them up a bit
Then give the tank a small syphon and top up before bed

I'd say the cucumber goes quicker than the rest in all honesty
I stopped giving them broccoli cause it was hardly touched each time
I change at least 50 litres every second day
And normally 10 - 15 litres daily

Its the advice I was given by a few more experienced on here!!!!!
If it works for them...... I'm happy to follow suit
Out of about 400 fry I've lost a total of about 10
So it seems to be going fairly well at the moment

Currently feeding mine on brine shrimp, veg (cucumber peas and zucini) and algae wafers
Brine shrimp is not so good for Ancistrus. Best to stick with the veggies and always peel off the outer skin incase of pesticides.
Feeding them wafers and veggies in the morning before work.
Then in the evening remove any left over veggies. Then pleco wafers again in the evening.
This has always worked well for me with Ancistrus.
Good filtration and water quality is also recommended.
Best of luck with them.
