Mystery Eggs

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,i got home from work yesterday evening to find eggs on the back glass and as they were all white I immediately thought 'Leleupi's".....now I have kept breeding pairs of Leleupi in the past and they were seriously secretive at this kind of thing, and seriously protective of the eggs (when I accidently sussed they had eggs hidden) so this is why it has become a bit of a mystery to me......firstly why would they lay the eggs on the glass out in the open?....why is neither of them showing any interest in protecting the eggs?....and why have the 11 Bristlenoses I have not eaten them over night?..........I have observed the tank for a couple of hours now and everything is as normal.....well except for about 50 white eggs on the back glass that are moving ever so slightly already!!
I hate turning lights on in my tank so here's a look at the eggs using a torch and an iPhone (so apologies for the poor vid):

Well the eggs have "very surprisingly" lasted another night and I think I have figured out the mystery..........whenever one of my Leleupi's comes within 6-10 inches of the eggs now she (i'm assuming it's the female) gets chased off by 2 Brichardi who are very aggressively protecting 4-5 week old fry that are 12-16 inches from the eggs...........i'm gonna lean a piece of wood over the eggs so "hopefully" she can tend to the eggs without being spotted by the Brichardi's.
I still cant figure out though why a secretive cave spawner like Leleupi spawned out in the open when there is plenty of hiding spots she could of chosen..........but anyway that's her prerogative I suppose so i'll leave it to her.

Well 45 minutes after giving the eggs a bit of cover she made her way over............I still foresee plenty of trouble in the very near future though!!

Well just to update, when I got up this morning the "mystery eggs" were not a mystery anymore.......they were gone!!.....maybe they were infertile and the mother ate them,i don't know to be honest........the colour of the eggs were the same as I've seen before with other Leleupi and I got to see fry so I don't know!! Gonna be breaking down the tank in a couple of months when the Brichardi fry in there are old enough to move on so kind of glad for now!!.......Cold water changes + Mysis = bloody spawns!! ha

that's a pity you lost your eggs ,better luck next time
Well they weren't my eggs and these things happen all the time......and i'm hoping there isn't a next time but I doubt that........as the pringles Ad goes "Once you pop you can not stop"...........I might go back to warm water changes until I move these on as the cold changes I fear could be triggering these spawns off!! I feed Mysis once every 10 days or so also so that could also be the trigger, but who knows but the fish!!
