Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Apple Snail eggs - UPDATE was created by Didihno (Didihno)
Well a few days ago I watched with great interest as two of my Apple snails were doing the dirty.
It looked like the smaller one(M?) was trying to actually climb into the shell of the bigger one(F?).
They eventually lost interest and so did I.
This morning however I lifted the lid of the tank to find this disgusting brain like structure above the water line.
I'm assuming its snail eggs.
What do I do?

Post edited by: Didihno, at: 2007/09/02 21:22

Leave them where they are. Under no circumstances should they be submerged in water. What fish do you have in the tank? Small snails have a very soft shell and will be eaten by a lot of fish.

If you want to breed them seriously it is best to transfer the eggs to a seperate tank. One way of doing this is to wet the eggs and wait a bit. Then slide them out of your tank and onto a piece of styrofoam and transfer them to a separate tank.
BTW it will take 2-4 weeks for the young to hatch, depending on temperature and species. There are generally 3 species in the shops, Pomacea bridgesii, P. canaliculata and P. paludosa. I have only ever seen P. paludosa once in my life so I guess yours are on of the first two species, probably P.bridgesii (well that's the ones all the LFSs in my area generally getin)
Check here for species identification www.applesnail.net/
Oh, and the young will pretty much eat anything

Apple snails are not that long lived and not that cheap either so growing your on offspring makes sense if you want to keep a few in your tank. You don't need an extra tank or any equipment to grow them on. An ice cream tub will do and they will eat anything from flake to dead fish.
Many breedesr use them in their fry tanks to get rid of the food that hasn't been eaten by the fry.

Defo P.bridgesii .
I did a good read up from that link thanks Holger.
Just one thing, my eggs are white and the eggs on that site are all pink to red.
Are mine infertile?

I wouldn't think so. The ones my snails lay are beige and they still hatch. Wait and see

Baby snails!

The first clutch of eggs has exploded in a swarm of baby snails.
I'm a daddy, and again, and again etc etc
Quite a few, I reckon at least 20 so far and still 1/3 of the clutch to go, and a second clutch that was half the size.

Just to throw something in there sorry if I seem rude but its the snail thing . I have turbo snails in my tank (marine) and the young are carried by the parent , the most Iv seen is 2 on the Parent and they're at the bottom of the shell so the snail has to be stuck to the viewing glass before you con see the offspring. And like your snails shell are soft when young.

I have witnessed a few attacks by the fish, one discus has tried to eat a couple, unsuccessfully, and a Black Widow also pecked at one, also unsuccessfully.
The most they have done is to knock the snail off the glass.
We'll see how they get on.

Small update,
The baby snails are growing well, some are nearly three times the initial size!
Might have a few to trade in the near future.
