Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I got Fry!!

when looking for my female krib in her usual spot I seen her nearby and there were a few dozen little fry swimming underneath.
What do I do now?
They are in my community tank, is there any chance of survival?
what do I feed them, do I need to try and catch them? Will my other fish eat them?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Astrid

Congrats Astrid, thats fantastic news, you must be delighted. well done.
What are your other fish in the tank at present,of course there is a danger they will be eaten but depends on what your keeping in the tank at present.
The fry will go to the mothers mouth if there is any danger. Also the fry will school together. The parents will try to mind them as much as possible. Have you places for them to hide,a coconut shell is a good idea as they can retreat there at night. Used crushed bloodworms or liquidfry at this stage. The parents are good ususally however if its there first time spawning they may not protect them full time, they come to learn this in time I think. Dont take the fish out of the tank as they will get aggressive towards one another ie. the male and female. If you see the male and female fighting alot it may be necessary to remove one of them as they can injure one another during this time. Watch out also that they arent too aggresive with your other tank mates. Also they are likely to spawn every 4 to 5 weeks from here on! Congrats. Get some pics also for us!!!

I have a few hidingplaces, I think they were born in one of my ornaments wich is kind of a cave that is were the mum was all the time, so they do swim back up in there at night? good, I was worried because the parents had dug a hole under that particular ornament an I seen my cory's and barbs near there just now, no sign of the parents, they are in the cave.
I am very exited and keeping everything crossed

I have 6 odessa barbs, 1 bleu gourami, 7 pepper cory, 6 trillinateus cory and another couple kribs (M&F)
and a clawed frog

Yes they will return to the cave at night, the female will also suss out the tank first thing in the morning before the fry decide to follow. They are one of the more interesting and intellegent fish, particularly when they are in the parenting mood as they presently are now. She probably went missing or at least kept herself hidden for about 4 or 5 days before they hatched.

Happy days, let nature takes it course from here on in. Maybe its an idea to let a small light on in the room so the kribs can see whats going on,it can fends off any of the other fish in the tank from going at the fry. I have my golden rams spawning at present and thats what Im doing now at night,(not hatched yet and unlikely to on the first spawn),but its an idea for you anyhow.

Grand, I'll leave the light in the room on ovenight, but if they are in the cave ,I don't think any other fish has been allowed to look at it ever since they chose that spot weeks ago,
and I hope they will be safe there overnight, I'll keep everyone posted on hhow things go
I am sooo exited, I wish my own pregnancy would be this quick:laugh:

Just a quick update, of the first batch about 12-15 survived and are now the size of an adult neon, and surprise this morning mamy krib brought another batch of fry out of her cave, looking like about 50 of them, would be nice to know how many survive of this batch
