Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My Oscars spawned at 11pm last night!!! Pics etc. was created by Loggser (Loggser)
2 of them have been going thru the motions this last 3 days.
Have been there a few times before, wasnt sure if I'd had a
male/female combo anyways but guessed it to be the case.
Usual tactic is grow 8 or so from young and hope two will
pair off, then rehome the other 6 keeping the mating pair,
just buying 2 adults from shops and hoping they pair
up doesnt work. I got lucky tho, very lucky :P

By eye I count approx 400 eggs, normal number for a 1st - 3rd batch, after that they can lay thousands every 4 weeks

Eitherways I'm now just waiting the 24 hours to check the
colour to see if their fertile or not

Couple of pics & a vid below :) :) :)

Coincidance I was offered another fishank for sale about 2 hours
before all this happened?:S

Someone up there knew something I didnt

Loggser,

I just wanted to offer a word of warning - presumably you still have the large Pleco in this tank?

These are inveterate egg-stealers, the Oscars can probably keep it out of harm's way during times when the tank is lit, but it's after 'lights out' that they become a much bigger threat.
I would suggest - if at all possible - you put a low wattage bulb close to the tank after dark, this will give sufficient light for the Oscars to see the 'plunderer' if it comes calling looking for Caviar supper.

Congratulations on the spawning - as you say, now they've started almost nothing will stop them doing it again, and again...

One last word of caution, you might find them a bit of a job to locate buyers for...not everyone likes Oscars (although I fail to understand why...).

Hi John,

Yes big Plec's still in the tank as I just have the one for now,
heading out to Blanchardstown today to buy another 160L for when
the fry grow out. I've 2 Fluval 405's on the big tank so I can
transfer one over along with robbing some of the tank water saving
me the whole cycling process. Then return it if I like once the
new filter is up and running (I'll seed the media from my own too)
Plec did try a nightime raid last night but got bitchslapped by
the 2 Oscars at the same time and retreated :P

Handy info about the light cheers for that tip ;)

I've had small fish in the past and I just dont get them either,
ok I understand tank space contraints too for some folks,
they say Oscars are the puppies of the fish world, lmao they really are.
They do all the usual begging for food, following me around the room
etc, great great fish, go big lads go big :cheer: :silly: :cheer:

I'll contact all the lfs's and sponsors and see whats happening
with supplying a few for the usual inshop credit etc, not many of
them tend to import them anyways for some reason, easy to keep,
tolerable of diverse water parameters, fun, friendly and way more
impressive than 10 small Tetra's for flips sake, imho that is no offence!
I've had people in the house taken aback when they see them in the
tank, ask what they are, ask loads a questions etc, impressed at them!
Had an Eircom engineer in the house 2 months back who I couldnt
get rid of, kept fish himself, "But nothing like that" he said

I'll see what shifts here at cheap prices etc then I guess I'll be looking
at heavy culling from the start only keeping the fitest,
best looking ones as no doubt thre'll be another batch on the way
and with the numbers they can produce theres simply no way I can
house or rehome/sell them all:S

*Update*

Sry changed isp and had no net for the last 5 days :S

Anyways I'm sorry to say I lost to lot, seems the Pleco got
them all during the 2nd night (did the light thing).
Dunno if the parents were caught napping or just went for
a wander etc but needless to say I wasnt ready for 400+ eggs
to be dropped in my lap anyways so its probably just aswell.

Now that I know I have a breeding pair of Oscars I'm getting
a 2nd tank ready for the Plec to stay in during the next spawn,
it'll also do me as a growning out tank for the fry if the
parents aint doing their job etc. I've decided to give them 3
tries at learning themselves as I'd rather have them raise the fry then pull them and do it myself.

Ahh well theres always next time :P
