Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Food For Thought?

Hey folks,

As some of you are aware I am attemting to breed Appistogramma macmasteri. This is my first attemmpt at breeding anything properly and its my first time keeping apistos of any kind. Im just boxing off a few things and was wondering what would be the best food for any fry I may end up with. I realise that there are probably foods out there that may be hard to get so Im interested to know of anything that comes to mind that may suit them. Cheers,

Jay

The best food for most fry are newly hatched Brine Shrimp, decapsulated being the best start, the fry of apistos aren't too small and will devour them, after that, ground up good quality flake or micro granules will be accepted readily.

Get a brine shrimp hatcher, cheap enough and the apistos will mill them. To get them in the mood to breed give them live food cultures and get ur ph down as well as ur kh.

What are they at right now....?

Hey Alan,

Thanks for the tip on the hatchery. Ph is neutral, introduced peat to the filter earlier today to lower it. I have been told to expect it to mabey level out at around 6.5. I intend to pop out tmw and pick up a Gh/Kh test kit. Had my eye on the API liquid kit. Are they any use?

Never used the api test kits, 6.5 near perfect once ur water isnt hard. The hatcher is great place it in the tank and the brine shrimp just swim out to be milled by the apistos.

Hope you get them breeding.

One thing I think nobody mentioned is that the need some sort of cave or flowerpot to spawn in, or a coconut will do(mine spawn in a pleco cave). You can go with the ph even lower than 6,5 and maybe get some ro water somwere, a low kh will only help. Good food and clean water for the pair as well.
Good luck and waiting to see pictures of the fry.

I definately live in a hard water area but I am unsure of the exact hardness. Will post test results tmw. If it turns out I have no luck I will definately try the RO water ;) . Thanks for the tips lads :) . Hope to have pics of fry soon...
