Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Depends on your community tank as it will grow quite large. Can go over 15 inches, and if you are keeping smaller fish it may look somewhat out of place. If you have other pleco's then it will defend its spot in the tank and you can expect it to run territoral if its faced with its own kind. Having said that, its not going to hunt down Gouramis and neons etc... Do you have other plecos?
Ive not kept a royal pleco purely as I prefer smaller fish, however they are a lovely fish and if your community tank is big enough then nothing stopping you from keeping it in with the other fish.
You need to make sure however that it gets enough food, alot of community tanks are nippy and fast and the fish will eat before the pleco. So you need to account for that, provide some driftwood also.

If your tank is big enough then nothing stopping you from adding it to an existing community tank.

A little word of warning, if you are buying this Fish from a shop ask to see its belly.
If it's any way hollow I would advise you to leave it there.
Royals can have awful internal problems which can manifest themselves by having hollow bellies.
There are others with more 'Royal' experience than me who can advise more comprehensively, but it's something to be considered.

As mentioned they can be territorial and aggressive from time to time. They do grow large but are very slow growers. These plecs produce a lot of waste so be prepared for plenty of vacuming. As John quite rightly pointed out, be sure to check its belly. These fish are starved before being shipped to reduce the chance of them poisioning themselves in their bags and as a result many will never take food and recover. A pinched, hollow belly is a dead give away for a soon to be dead Royal. Best of luck with yours.

Gotta make sure you have plenty of bogwood for the panaque to feed on too.
Don't think I'd put one in a community tank to be honest, they are pretty specialist fish & produce a lot of mess.

Can understand why you'd want to though, they are gorgeous and the price has come right down lately.. A couple of years ago they were 60 Euro for 2 inch fish.
