Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok, so today Im doing a water change, which I must admit was overdue by a week but anyhow.
Ive learned to check the water Im throwing out now gravel vac's are done as I seem to constantly find life within be it shrimp or fry there always seems to be something.
Well today Im abit stumped,Ive noticed these guys a few times and Im not sure what they are. Perhaps some type of cory fry perhaps (didnt see any eggs lately though, but may have been nabbed by other fish). They are very small and the pics are from a microscope.

First pic x 60

I'll put up a video later which literally stunned me, I noticed the fry this morning,it wasnt moving so I managed to get it out of the dish and put into a small microscope glass slide with a drop of water. I presumed it was dead and left it by the microscope and said Id come back to have a closer look at it this evening. Amazingly some 3 or 4 hours later, when I looked at it close up on the microscope I could see its heart still beating.
Im uploading the video at present so hence the delay.

Anyone able to hazard a guess at what fry this may be from?

Never saw my cory fry that close up so I couldn't say for sure, but I think it might be, what else is in the tank and maybe we can guess by the process of elimination.

Great shot, look forward to the video. What microscope did you use?

Video is taking an age to load up,but will put it up as soon as it loads. You can see the heart beat of the fry.
The microscope is a Traveler microscope. The ones that were in Lidl's a while back.Has 10x,60x & 200x magnification, but I find the 60x more than enough as the 200x can be abit too close without the actual clarity.

Existing tank habitants are all community,so lets see what pairs could be there,
Guppys & endlers - but no chance that something this small is one of theirs.
Cherry barbs - wouldbt be surprised if it was them,I think its either them or the bronze corys.
The neons and cardinals, galaxys and a few more are unlikely.
Im putting it down to either Cherry or Bronze that this belong too.
Similarly Ive also found larger fry fish (still v small in camparison to livebearers fry),which are white, almost see through, whereas this existing fry is black in colour when viewed.

I must try to get a shot on the camera later,(my focus probably wont allow me to get it close enough),but there are some great looking assassin snail pods that I can see on the bogwood also.Very nice looking pods.Found 5 assassins today in another tank when cleaning my external filter,as well as about 10 bristnose fry and 1 kulhi loach!!!

Hope this video works. (Click on the pic)...You can see the heartbeat of the fry in it).It was much clearer when viewed on screen, however the video still does it some justice.I was stunned to see it living despite in only being in a drop of water for a few hours.

My money is on a Galaxy fry. These are almost like a black hair with two dots (the eyes) at one end when viewed from above.
If it is i would guess it to be up to 2 weeks old.

Great shots by the way Gavin.

I don't know about the Fry, but I do know how I could have made my washing machine live longer!!!

Bloody adverts are infiltrating everywhere!

Your description is spot on, thats exactly what they look like. Ive noticed quite a few of them in my gravel vac water changes recently. Will have to think about trying to save a few next time around.
