Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anyway, while doing the rounds yesterday checking that all was ok, I looked into my Leopard Frog tank and noticed one of my males sitting on a nice clutch of eggs. First time spawners with these also. Really happy about that. Had a bit of a feeling something might happen because two days ago I carried out a 50% water change with cool RO water to drop the TDS and slightly lower the ph level. Few hours later I noticed a trapping, but didn't know if it was practise or the real thing. Happened really quickly though as less than 24 hrs later the eggs were laid!
Tried to get a pic but not successful as he won't let me get a good look behing him into the back of the cave. Also, as it's his first time, I really don't want to give him any reason to freak out and kick out / destroy the eggs, so I just moved the cave (with dad and eggs) into a saver within the tank. I'll leave it now for a few days and hope for the best.
Now for the hat-trick with the zebra's........

Any pics of the adults (not sitting on eggs).
IMO it is best not to move plecs, especially there first time round.
They can be quite nervous resulting in either ejecting the eggs or eating them.
Do you fancy swapping some L260 fry for some L411 fry?

What size is your group(s), and what sex ratio?
I'm hoping to give these a go in the future so I might come back to you for advice if thats alright.

Well I've had a fairly challenging few days with these guys and it's just not gone well at all. It was a really decent sized batch that were laid with a total of 26 eggs in all and for the first week or so everything was going fine. Then in drips and drabs the male started kicking them out of the cave - a few a day until the last of them came out last night. I did exactly the same as I had done a few months back with the L260's (which went well) but it didn't go so well this time. Lost them all. They had even started developing pigmentation and had good shape definition so not sure really what went wrong. Could be a number of factors I guess - maybe first time dad, maybe biofilm in the frysaver. Couple of times I did shine a torch in to the cave and I know I should not have done that so maybe he got freaked out a bit. Water parameters were stable and had plenty of aeration going so at a loss really and very disappointed.
Met Darren (Platty252) last weekend and think I'll take his advice on leaving them be should they spawn again. I placed the male back in his tank earlier today and when I went to check that all was ok a short while ago I did notice a somewhat plump female hanging around outside his cave so who knows. Only thing is, the male hasn't really eaten before today for almost two weeks so not sure how that will work out. Back to the drawing board......
@ Turner85 - Yes I keep each species to a tank of their own for now until I can be sure to obtain maybe a few trio's or pairs. Then I might seperate groups out, but will still dedicate each group to a species only tank
@ Melander - Currently have a pair of L260 adults and 7 L134's (including 2 I picked up at Seahorse last weekend, so the breeding came from the original group of 5). Best estimate so far is 4 males to 3 females. As i mentioned in previous post, I wasn't really expecting breeding activity just yet as I didn't believe they were big enough and they're not long over 2 years old.
Going to sit down at the pc tomorrow and finally try to sort out this posting of pictures crack. I have a few (though not very good). Darren gave me pointers on it last weekend so I'll give it a go.
