Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all
I got my hands on them couple of months ago in petmania navan, pure luck :woohoo:
they didn't know what they have and had them named as congo tetras
bought 9 of them (17 quid each - for congo tetra ??!!) was able to knock it down to 10er
anyway her's breeding routine

I used the same tank as for boesemanis 54 liter, hang-on cascade filter with sponge guard on inlet, 28 degree Celsius, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate = 0, and hard 6.5 dH, slightly alcaline 7,8 pH water
again live plants as spawning medium, treated with potassium permanganate for disinfection, spawning mop can be used also
1 male and 3 females went in, groups like this allow females to rest when one of them is being "convinced" to amorous activities by intensive chasing
eggs are being laid in small amounts every day and hatch after about 5 days, therefore adults should be removed on the 5th day morning
fry is tiny when they hatch and first food should be infusoria, rotifers, "green water"
after a week they can manage brine shrimp and micro worms

awesome tank man.one of the better photos on here.I have a mad soft spot for them..so much so that were setting up a fly river setup in the shop tmr that will look just like yours! the only difference is it will contain one of these bad boys.

www.biolib.cz/en/image/id9133/

I've had it for 7 years and haven't room for him at home. Can wait to get stuck in to doing it.I reckon he's going to be a minor celebrity! keep up the excellent work thats a fine tank.

depends on the plants you use, and if he's fed loads of fruit he tends to leave them alone.

I thought that the last update will be the last one, but I have a few recent photos
I'm hoping for a lot better colouration than the parents themselves. Juveniles are at the size I bought the parents and they are displaying a lot more intensive colours already. The diet is live food reach and mostly self prepared with addition of Tetra Prima which I think is one of the best available colouring foods

Once again fair play Bart, great pics and thread. How many fish you breeding at the moment?

I know I probably wrecked your head on the angels thread with all the questions but just one more (for now anyway!). The plants that you have in the tanks - are they just in their containers with gravel or what are they filled with? Looks like a very handy solution for moving from tank to tank!

@PompeyBill
Plants are in containers filled: for crypts with play sand+addition of micro elements (FILTUS in pellets), for other plants mix of aqasoil for pond+clay+unwashed horticultural grit+micro elements
Pots are topped with washed gravel to keep everything from polluting water.
10 hours of light/day
There is hundreds of ideas about planted tanks but i prefer cheapest;) and low maintenance.
Diana Walstad "Ecology of planted aquarium" this book is very helpful in understanding low maintenance planting, although i must warn u it is filled with chemical formulas and experiments, tough read sometimes.

Bart,
Why not put a few batches of your spares into the ITFS Auction - I for one would be very keen to bid for at least three female Bleheri - my males were 'over amorous' to the females.

Metal detector he! U evil grave robber
But seriously i don't give rats a$$
Obtaining license for detector for the site is sometimes huge pain. Dumb regulation and dumb problems because of it.
If u find something though let me know i'd love to see it before it's gone to private collection ;)

I was talking to a chap last week (or was it the week before?) from Sligo about this very subject and he was saying exactly the same.
I brought my detector from England when I came over, not knowing they were not allowed over here.
So, it went out into the shed and has remained there ever since!
It turns out that a local man had been using one and had been 'raided' by the Irish equivalent of the Special Branch - not wanting that to happen it hasn't seen the light of day, the battery pack is probably well 'gone' now anyway!
And, anyway - 'Grave Robbing' wouldn't be me - I wouldn't want to risk the wrath of the Fairies! :( :-(( :(

More like wrath of the BOG MAN ;)
Yeah they treat the prohibition of metal detectors very seriously. A lot of hoards and votive bog offerings were lost to "metal detecting enthusiasts" but this regulation stops nothing and is pain for me. Whenever I want to use detector on archaeological site or during so called monitoring I need to get the licence for it :S
The funny thing is that they are readily available ie maplin electronics in blanchardstown
Anyway my breeding topic turns in to whining over some silly fish unrelated stuff;)
I hope I'll be able to participate in the auction
There's going to be special bag of females for u John
(bag of females) hehe i want one too :woohoo:

Seriously though - that's a great gesture, looking forward to meeting you if you can make it.
