Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a 100L tank with Multies and Occies in my room for the past few months, but knew they were not in optimal conditions, as my water is too soft for Tangynikans- @5Gd. I really didn't want to start messing with my own water unless absolutely necessary, so, after testing a few water supplies, found my girlfriend's parents have quite hard water in Ashbourne- @15Gd. For the past month she has lugged bottles up to me to mix with the local supply for water changes which brought the GH up to a steady 10d.
Did a water change before leaving for my parents for Christmas for three days. When I returned I was treated to little wrigglers outside shells in both the Multie colony and one of the female Occies. Terrific to see the parental instincts of these fish. The Multies all group together to protect the one shell and the male and female Occie have shut off a whole corner of the tank from any other fish coming near their progeny.
To protect the fry, I moved the female Occie with her babies to a breeding box, complete with shells and substrate so she doesn't feel too exposed.
I have been feeding the fry on Liquifry food that is mixed with water and squirted into the shells with a small syringe. At what point should I move on to feeding them Artemia etc? Is there anything I have done wrong, or should be doing at this point. All pointers welcome.
Thanks in advance,
L

Well done Lorcan.

I've never kept these either but you could see how you get on with that dusty freeze dried daphnia I off-loaded to you not so long ago. It sounds ideal (to me anyway). Liquifry is an excellent food, but I only use it for the first week for corydoras fry for it can make a real mess of your water eventually.

All the best,

Dave

To be honest, I can't take all of the credit. Some must go to Mommy and Daddy too! :P

On a more serious note, that Liquifry seems to make the water a bit cloudy alright, but was only going to use it for a week or so, so I'm sure it'll do just the job. That's a good idea about the Hikari- might start adding a little bit of that to the mix in the next day or two and then add in the newly-hatched Artemia as I reduce the Liquifry.

I know this will be old stuff to many on here, but it really is amazing to see such minute creatures already developing a personality as they tumble and squabble with each other.

Thanks for that lads,
L

Anyone have any idea what stage I should remove the mother from the fry?

multi fry can be left with parents indefinitely but occellatus will usually eat their own fry after a few weeks. multis are colony spawners and several pairs can live side by side without problems. occellatus require a shell for each adult and as the fry grow will be chased away or eaten.
newly hatched brine shrimp is best for either species as the tiny fry have suprisingly big mouths.
hope this helps
