Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Those who have been reading through the various threads will know that I have a pair of discus on their 4th spawn without the success of having free swimming fry for greater than a day - but we live in hope.

On Wednesday I was watching my 'community' tank where I have some Rainbow Cichlids (Herotilapia multispinosa) and was intrigued to see one actively protecting a territory and in fact had turned a dark navy - and to return home yesterday to loads of fry. All of this has happened out of sight in an castle of sorts. I know these fish are supposed to be easy to breed, but the irony of the efforts I have been putting into the Discus without success to this point and the non intervention, not knowing something was even going on with these lovely fish, didn't escape me.

Hi Platty252,

Don't go there. I already have 3 tanks - I am allowed to get another one but have been told that an extension of the kitchen or a new sun room would need to be build to fit it  Looks like it could be the most expensive tank in the country

Alternative is to turn the garage into a fish room without herself finding out.

Hi Platty,

Garage did get cleaned out - and yes skips are expensive, but worth it. Tank which was new at the time was supposed to move there but is currently in the utility room for the moment and has permission to stay there. Garage is only half done however - all the crap moved out but rest needs to be put in order. Plan is for some shelves at some time in the future...then the decision of do I have the time to deal with more tanks in the garage.

Back to Rainbows, all fry gone but in fairness I didn't intervene to try and save any. Each morning I'd go searching and would think the fry would be gone only for some to turn up later... However Monday morning Mum was back out with the group and had changed colour. Then I knew they were gone. I will intervene the second time.

Discus - Free swimming on Sun - all gone again on Monday. I must be doing something wrong....

Anyway - ended up in Aquatic Village yesterday and eased my disappointment with a new Blue Diamond....beauty.

I know what you mean about the garage/fishroom. More tanks, more time. I'm down to 15 tanks at the moment.
Thats a bummer about the discus. I dont understand how you keep loosing the fry. I'm sure you are fed up scratching your head over it.
I'm sure the Rainbow's will go again but the question is have you got the room and the time for the little beauties.

Down to 15 tanks - wow, where do you get the time ? I'd love to turn part of the garage into a fish room but time is precious with young kids, commuting and now it's the grass cutting season :D
