livebearers breeding tank setup help needed?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

to be honest with you ... there really are no requirements for livebearers ( well from my experience anyway ) apart from stable and good water parameters .... the likes of mollies and guppies and platty's etc would have no problem breeding in a bare tank .
The only problem you could quite possibly have is keeping any fry safe . Alot of the time for me it has been total luck to find fry in the tank still alive and in enough time to catch and isolate them . Raising fry is gonna be your next problem , i.e. wot to feed them etc .... but thats another easy problem to solve as there are plenty of fry foods available and plenty of articles here on the forum about brine shrimp hatching and live food culturing for when you get that far .
I am by no means an expert or anything , but i'm sure some of the more accomplished members of the forum will be more than able and willing to expand on even more advice
best of luck with the new venture

I find that if you have enough plants, mosses(java moss) and other hiding places allot of the fry will survive by their own instincts and it's enough to keep a group growing.
If you want to breed large amounts and maximise survival then I'm sure there is better ways.
Another danger for fry could be the filter if it is too powerfull so a sponge filter is always good if you want to save fry.
Good luck!

yep spot on information by the lads plenty of java moss and fine leaved plants like cabomba will provide plenty of hiding places for fry, but be aware the parents will eat the fry, and as melander say a sponge / bow filter is best for a breeding setup. otherwise you can if you have a spare small tank use my method which is place lobster netting across the tank dipping to about mid way down into the water place the pregnant female in the top and when she gives birth the fry will fall through into the bottom of the tank away from hungry mouths

thanks for the info loads yeah i am going to give the live plants a go in it and i have got tryd live plants yet so will have to look into that and if i should use co2 or wat?
also i have a fluval 205 in the vision 260 that i have now and i know its not enough so im thinkin off gettin a pump that will do over 300 for that tank and to use the fluval 205 for the 180 do u think that would be to powerful?
also would the breeding boxs work for the female to drop the fry into the bottom off the box so they would not get eatin?

with filtration the more the better,(within reason), i like double or more filtration that needed, so you could even go for a bigger filter such as a 405 on your 260ltr,
