Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Xiphophorus sword tails was created by Valerie (Valerie)
Hi all,
I would like to add some xiphophorus to my tank ... they are nice and colourful. However, it feels like I am not meant to keep them ...

It happened before and I did put it to my lack of experience ... however, last weekend, I purchased 3 of these along with 3 x-ray tetras and 1 female guppy. Within a few hours of being in the quarantine tank, one started developing white fungus around its mouth ; later, another one while the 3rd one had what looked like greyish spots around its head. Though I added some fungicide based on methylene blue, the 3 died. The other fish are ok - so far.

I was wondering, next time I try to get sword tails, should I immediately start an antibiotic treatment (oxycyclin?) as soon as I put them in the qt tank ?

Thank you for your help and much appreciated advice ! :)

Valerie

Hi Valerie,

Are you sure your water parameters suit these fish? Do you know the water parameters of your LFS? If your water differs greatly from theirs, introducing them too quickly could cause pH shock and would lead to a pretty quick demise.

Is your quarantine tank cycled? A large ammonia spike would also cause problems.

Regards,

Ken.

Valerie,
where is your dealer getting the fish from? Swordtails among many other liverbearers are inbred as hell in South East Asia. They keep their populations stabel with antibiotics. These fish are crap and shouldn't be sold.
Unfortunately many fish that where tough as old boots when I was a child such as Guppies, swordtails, platties have become diseae prone.

Very true!!!!
Singapore livebearers can be hit or miss! We have been using a supplier in Sri Lanka for a few years now and his livebearers are fantastic, we currently have jumbo swords in from him and they are lovely, his guppys are the best i have ever seen!!!! He doesnt use antibiotics or salt, all his stock are bred in freshwater, which is the way it should be!!!!! just clean freshwater!
