Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

my leleupi cant swim .. keeps trying to float

One of my leleupi is floating to the surface and keeps trying to swim down to the bottom...
its annoying him so much that he's swimming into my valis to try to get a grip so he doesnt float anymore.

He is as fat as the rest of them (maybe a bit swollen around the abdomen)
Im feeding large new life spectrum pellets, some of these float (!?)

The tank is only up and running about 2 months but I've seeded
the filter with sponges from my previous tank.

The other leleupi have spawned which leads me to believe the water is okay.

Temp 25 Celcuis
Ph: 8.0-8.2
all other paramaters are fine including gH and kH
I add epsom salts for the kH which should flush any blockages out.

any ideas? here's a pic

I'm not sure but the symptoms and the picture seems to point to a form of bloat IMO. Tha salt etc may work to move a blockage but I'd be prepared for the worst :(

Couls be a blockage but my guess is that the fish swallowd air when feeding on your floating food. Occurs quite often in goldfish. That's nothing to worry about. He'll fart himself happy.
Give it a day or two. If he's still not returned to normal put him in isolation and treat with epsom salt. That's your best bet when trying to clear a blaockage. If that doesn't work after 2 days put him out of his misery

The Anus looks a bit swollen too. Hopefully it just a blockage but it coul
be bloat. Stick with the salts for now.

This condition is common in Frontosa. As they gulp food from the surface they swallow air which gets trapped internally. Also floating food contanis air too so that adds to the effect. It doesnt always work its way through either, but it can be removed manually with a hypodermic needle,if the fish is worth the effort.
The Leilupi should be fine but Epsom will clear out their intestines,as far as I know the air gets trapped somewhere else along the way, maybe the swin bladder.
As a last resort if you can catch him/her give the swollen area a gentle squeeze, whilst the fish is underwater. Also Id soak floating foods for 10 minutes before feeding it to Africans (espacially Frontosa),they appreciate it in the long run.

If he's still eating, you could try feeding peas. They can be useful for clearing blockages if it's constipation related.

Regards,

Ken.
