Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Crystal clear water?

Just a quick query here. I have a 40g tank and though the parameters are absolutely fine and both plants and fish are doing well, I can never seem to get the water totally clear. In my 2 other tanks the water is crystal. what i'm really asking is 2 questions...

1) What methods do any of you use to clarify the aquarium water?

and

2) How do you all feel about water clarity aesthetically? Is it something you constantly strive for? Or do you feel as long as the quality of the water is good, clarity is irrelevant?

Thoughts please :hammer:

Crystal clear water is something I'm having issues with in my 190 litre
And I think that's what's to blame for the issues I've had lately

In fact I'm going to get a second external filter to try help it out too!
So are the custom filters I made up for my API nexx are working, but every time I get the water cleared up it goes cloudy again within a week!
Nitrites rise slightly but never nitrates or ammonia
I don't know if the fish mind the water not being crystal clear, but I want to keep them in the best conditions I possibly can so I prefer the water to be totally crystal clear!

The only time i had probs with a tank that was not crystal clear was the one that was over stocked purigen worked for a while but wasnt long before it was off again but thats no good for you anyway cause you cant have plants with it would you be over stocked and what fish do you have

does my head in if a tank is not clear hate when someone walks into the house and sez nice tank bit cloudy isin it... and it wouldnt even be that bad, but that when i kept american cichlids and was over stocked

my tank isn't so much cloudy, it's more that there always seems to be a little particulate matter suspended in it. it's planted up and hopefully in 2-3 months it'll look really good. i have 6 tetras, a dozen cories, 5 otos, a bristlenose and 11 shrimp of various descriptions, all serviced by a JBL crystalprofi e901. the water tends to be quite tannin soaked, so i'm not worried about it being tap-water clear

I know you probably know this but just in case, do you have filter floss in the external?

There's different type of clear water, and different types of cloudy water.

As many of my tanks use peat as a substrate (not peat under anything....just peat on the bottom) then I don't expect to have clear water or water without debris.

However, even with water having lots of disturbed peat bits, I do expect a certain of type of clarity.

Of concern, though, is cloudy water that is an indication of a bloom that reduces oxygen content or as an indicator of pollution. But, then that would also mean looking at the fish as well.

i do, even though it said in the manual that it's not necessary. i'm a belt and braces kinda guy. i'm not worried about the quality of the water at all. as i said, parameters are good and the fish seem happy and are showing really good colours. i was delighted to see yesterday that 2 bronze cories i've had for years had started breeding. and apart from a little bit of black hair algae, i'm currently getting almost nil algae on the glass
