Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Albino Cory savaged.

Albino Cory savaged. was created by Didihno (Didihno)
I went out on Sat and brought home a pair of Kribensis for my community tank. After chasing a few tetras they quitened down and were really fun to watch.
This morning I got up and they had savaged the smallest of my Corys.
His tail is completely gone and the little savages were just hovering above the stricken Cory and randomly biting him to death.
Well I put the Cory into a fry container and he is active enough but looks in an awful state.
He is still eating, which is something.
But his wounds are pretty severe.
Will the tail grow back?
I read up on Kribs and didn't see anywhere that they were so vicious.
Different sites were saying that they could be aggressive to each other and to a fish that stayed into their (breeding) territory, but nowhere did I read about such dedicated attacks.
Is it simply that Corys/Kribs cannot be mixed?

Oh, the Kribs went straight into my African tank.
Not bullying anyone anymore, the little beasts.

Hi Didihno.

It all depends on what kribs you have.

My experience of kribs spreads over many years.

I have really had some nasty ones that have killed fish and I have also had some really quiet pairs that only chase when breeding.

Sad to say it depends on how damaged the corys tail is as to wether it will grow back or it will be a fish with just a stump for a tail. I really hope he makes it. Have you put any medication in the tank to help him ?

I have had a pair of kribs in my Malawi tank and really I think that is the best place for them.

They bred in there too. 8)

Let me know how he is going or if you need to know anything else.

Jill

Kribs are cichlids. They are African riverine fish but have the breeding characteristics of Central American cichlids. Whch means they make agressive but excellent parents. Unlike Malawi and a lot of Tanganyikan Cichlids they are not Mouth brooders. They prefer caves to lay there eggs in and will guard their young to the death.
They also like the bottom of the tank so any Corry unfortunate to enter a territory of a pair of Kribs preparing to spawn will be in trouble.

Persponaly I would never put a sick fish into a fry net. This will only stress the fish more and cause more problems to start. I would leave him the community tank but wipe his wounds with Meth/blue first.
Eventually your Kribs will breed in the Africa tank and will be destroyed defending the eggs or fry if the eggs get to that stage.

Ime..A pair of Kribs is not a great idea with other bottom dwelling fish. Especially if the are timid like Corrys.

They are best kept in a Community fish with hardy species and not small Tetras as they will goggle up Neons and Guppys.

Never put a sick fish into a small fry net. Use a Hospital/BB tank or treat in tank were it came from if possible.

Anthony, thanks for that.
I might rethink my tank stock then.
I could rehome all the tetra in the smallest tank in the 240l (which was the plan originally) and then put the kribs into that tank alone.

On putting sick fish into solitary I tend to agree but in this case I wanted to see the Cory eat something, which he wasn't doing in the community.

I'll let him out tonight since he ate a good ammount of food last night.

Thanks for the advice so far lads.

Processor.

Amazingly he is still alive.
All fins have grown back except the tail (and one of his barbels).
I don't know if it will to be honest, the damage was severe.

Kribs have been passed on to Deeco.
Thanks for asking!

I have done nothing, I usually let nature take care of these things.
1 salt bath at the start, solitary for feeding only for the first 2 days (so he'd defo get some food, which he gobbled) and removed the b@stard Kribs of course.

Never saltbath Corrydoras catfish. They are very intolerant to salt.

Really?
Didn't seem to do him any harm.
(it was a very weak salt bath mind)

Final update (I hope).
The brave little Cory is almost back to full strength.
Tailfin is almost full size again, but its not quite right looking, I guess it never will be since it was bitten completely off down to the roots.
Ditto for his barbels.

Incredible story of recovery and hardiness by an amazing little fish.
