Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hope somebody can help. Have two tanks, one cold water & one tropical. Green stuff (algae?) keeps appearing on the glass. Keep cleaning it off, but seems to re-appear quicker ever time. Have tried the "green away" stuff by Interpet, but makes no difference. Anybody able to help? :(

Algie normaly is a sign of high phosphate or nitrate in the water.

Is it both tanks that you are having the problem with?
Is your tank heavily stocked?
Do you have your lights on for a long period of time?
Maybe you are feeding the fish a bit to much.
Is the algie on anything else apart from the glass?

Give us a bit more info on your tank (tanks) and setup and we may be able to narrow down the cause.

Yes - Green problem is in both tanks.

Heavily stocked - No
- Tropical 70L - 5 tetras, 6 platties, 1 guppy, 1 fighter & 2 catfish
- Cold 70L - 4 goldfish & 2 orandas

Light on - usually 10 hrs per day / Not in sunlight

Feed the fish very sparingly myself, not quite sure when I'm away.

Yes algae is on glass but also on tank contents (plants, decorations, etc)

Hope you can help

It sounds to me like 1 of 3 things or a combanation of all 3.
Your nitrates could be to high. If you have a test kit you can test for this.
Phosphates are to high. Again a test kit will tell you if this is to high.
High nutrients. Plants feed of the nutrients in the water but the nutrients also feed the algie.

If you have live plants and are using a plant suplament i would stop using this for a week or 2.
Stop using the green away.
Shorten the time the lights are on. Bring it down to 8-10 hours a day. Also give a 1 hour lights off in the middle of the day. This can slow down the develepment of the algie.
Do some water changes of about 30% a couple of times over the next week.

This is just my oppinion and what i would do.

I suggest you post this problem in the plant section. People who are serious about plants will know a lot about algie and how to get rid of it.

I hope this is of some help, let us know how you get on.
If you dont have a test kit i would suggest you get one. Tetra or A.P.I. are good in my opinion.

Thanks for the response platty.

- Don't have live plants, so not using a supplement.
- Test kit shows water is ok.
- Will reduce lighting & do more regular water changes.

Will keep you posted on developments.
