Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

dont know much about using rain water but i remember reading a post here (search might be best) that said you had to collect the rain water in a container which is inert as if you collect it on a metal roof, cooper(or other metals) can leech into the water same with slate as it will raise the ph.
Dont quote me on this but I think rain water is the same as RO water.
Personal I think your best bet would be to use RO water as you can be certain theres no nasties in it.

Haven't used it myself, but have considered it. As was said earlier, it's best to collect directly into a container. Collecting from a down pipe from a gutter will likely result in water contaminated with metal and whatever else is on your roof.

Before you use the water, it's best to run it through a filter with active carbon for 24 hours to remove impurities.

The other thing you need to think about is becomming reliant on rain water to maintain your tank. It's fine at the moment, but when we get a dry spell (if ever), you will need to use an alternative which will impact your water chemistry.

I decided not to use it for the above reasons. RO is more hassle, but at least your assured of a contstant quality water supply. The other option is to keep fish that suit your water parameters rather than trying to change them.

Post edited by: KenS, at: 2007/08/04 22:26

Hi Jamie,
rainwater in your area is fine. Just wait for a day or two of constant rain (how hard is that this year) before you start collecting. You can get am adapter for your gutter that you can set either closed and your gutter will work as usual or open in and the rainwater will run into a container (water vat) you have below it. gutter pipes are made from PVC and are foodsafe and tgus OKto use with fish. I have used rainwater for years before RO units became affordable.
BTW, I have your Javamoss. Will you be at the meeting on Friday?
