Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is it possible that my suckerfish, a common plec, is killing fish?

I caught him this morning with his great big suckermouth clamped on one of my favourite fish, a turquoise gourami. The fish is, of course, dead but I'm not sure if he died a natural death or was killed by the plec.

If I thought the plec was killing my other fish I'd get rid of him because he's definitely the ugliest fish I have....

I seriously doubt he killed it, i'd imagine he was mopping up the remains.

What have ya got in the tank, Any suspects?

Also don't forget that fish sometimes just die, as long as the water is ok and the tankmates are well suited i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

my guess as well, pleco eating dead fish. There are reports that plecos will latch on to fish like discus and angels but personally I think that's a lot of nonsense. Never seen it and always kept some sort of pleco with discus, angels and Uaru.

They can and will latch onto sick and dying fish, I have personally experienced this.
But these fish have to be really close to the big flusheroo, I mean practically scraping the bottom of the tank and no energy to escape whatsoever.

Thanks everyone. After a bad initial tank setup a fair few fish died, but the deaths have all but stopped now and I've stopped blaming that plec.

Hi Holger.
It is not nonsense. I seen it in a petshop.
Plecos will latch onto sick fish. I believe these fish had an
external bacterial infection and the pleco could smell it.
You know what Disus smell like when they have an E.B.I.

No healthy fish would allow this to happen but a sick fish
might not have the strength to swim away.

One of my tiny little rainbow fish got whitespot and I openly witnessed some of the other fish bully him yesterday! It was astonishing to watch. He's nowhere to be seen today so I fear he passed away or else he's hiding.

Hi sabrina
If your rainbow fish has/had (as he may be dead) whitespot chances are your other fish
have it and there not showning the signs yet best to treat the tank with some meds.

Thank you. In fact I started treating it last night - I guessed the others might have it or be in the way of getting it :(

Hi SabrinaSummerville,
Provided your fish can take it, raising the temp to 30deg. in your tank will definitely help getting rid of whitespot (caution : doing so decreases the amount of O2 in the water).
Good luck.;)
Valerie

Thanks Valerie. I have extra O2 pumps in the tank so I'll chance it.
