Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Black blotches

I have some Columbian tetras (Hyphessobrycon columbianus) in my main tank for about a year. They appear healthy as are the rest of the fish in the tank however, every couple of months i seem to lose one to the same illness. Firstly they get these black spots on their body and then slowly lose their silver/blue colour and turn slightly white.

This only effects these fish, the tank is stocked with just tetras and corydoras.

Seems to be a bacterial infection, Any ideas?

Hi Peter,

My 2 cents worth... had a Black Phantm Tetra with similar symptoms except for mine had black patches rather than spots but also lost colour by looking very pale. I removed him to a hospital tank for about a week but didn't get any better so put him down.
All other fish OK but will keep you posted if I come accross it again.
Sorry its not much help to you... just relaying my story.

Yeah Processor, sounds the same as mine. Black blotches on the body (I know i said spots).

I've been told it may be linked to Ph in the tank being too high for certain types of tetra.

Ph was 7.2, but recently has been gradually lowered due to addition of pressurised Co2. It's a constant 6.8 now.

If that's the case then I am the exception.
My tank has been a steady 7.6 to 7.8 (if thats steady) since I began last December and none of the others suffered the same fate.
Wouldn't really indicate Ph to me otherwise I would expect more probs.

I dunno...........??

Just looking at your list of fish. I'm surprised you have any small tetras/guppys in your tank with the 2 pictus.

Is that why you are getting rid of them?

No the only reason I'm prepared to give them away is because of the number of fish in the tank . Have to be honest I never had a problem with them. They hang out at one end of the tank with the 4 Dollars and don't bother anyone else at all.
I did suspect that they took a Neon I was missing once but he turned up after a week or so - probably practising for the Hide n' Seek championships.
I have even had baby mollies at 6 weeks old in with them and they are all still swimming around.

Your not the first to mention the Pictus but my 2 don't seem to be typical...unless the typical dsescription is incorrect.
